It is a map of who we are… at least as far as how people we interact with online will see us But it also helps us explore and learn…
eSafety is about avoiding the monsters. There are different types of monster about – there are the mire-dwelling goblins of despair who drag us down when we are struggling to learn, for instance Teachers, librarians and mentors can help guide us Google, like a sat-nav can sometimes lead us to the wrong place – it takes skill to be able to get the best results from it
Personal learning networks help support our learning - the key to building and ‘exploiting’ our PLNs is our Digital Identity - need to engage with people - ask questions, provide your own insights and contribute to other people’s learning through discourse
Life (and education) can have many twists and turns Your Digital Identity can have many facets – different reflections of you that you can’t always be aware of - other people can help you discover how you look to others online - even your choice of ‘avatar’ can have an impact on how others view you online.
OK, thanks Jerome Bruner, for the term. Scaffolding – the educational way of exploiting Zygotsky’s concept of the Zone of Proximal Development PLN provide scaffolding for the self-learner This Is Me produces learning materials, and sessions like this, to help people explore ideas about their Digital Identity and how it can help them
Google – or any other search – can help you get a quick idea of how other people might see you online If you contribute to forums or other websites, take a look at them too – or better, get a Critical Friend to have a look and tell you what they like and don’t like about your DI. How employable do you look? Do you engage with others in a constructive way? Etc. Key words How do you look to others if you only have a ‘plain, clean, profile’ – why do employers like to see information about your hobbies and pastimes on CVs?
