Slide 16 Now lets look specifically at the Databases that hold scholarly information Some of these databases are not freely available on the internet – such as CAB Abstracts, Agricola and Web of Science. The U of A libraries subscribe to these databases – this is why you must authenticate before you use them. Others such as the USDA forest Service Database is available on the web – this is where it becomes important to be able to spot good from bad on the internet.
Slide 27 Next we are going to search for news articles. There are a number of places in which you can find news articles. Again, these are databases that the University of Alberta Subscribes to.
Slide 35 Searching Websites – I am going to show you a useful website and a useful search engine that you can browse through later on.
Slide 38 Citing References As you all know, it is really important to cite your references. The university has recently subscribed to RefWorks – this is a citation manager that is web-based. Because it is web-based this means that you can access it anytime and anywhere there is internet available – it is not tied to a specific machine the way that procite and endnote are. Essentially what refworks does is it helps you to build a database of references and then when you go to write your paper if you use it to enter your citations into your paper as you write, by the time you are finished your paper, your refworks will have your bibliography built. All you have to do is tell it to create your bibliography.
Slide 39 To access refworks go to www.refworks.com I am going to hold Intro to refworks sessions on – you are all welcome to come to the sessions. They last no longer that an hour and a half and when you are finished the session you will be able to use refworks to write your papers
Slide 40 No matter how you do you citations, it is really important to be consistent throughout your work. There are a number of styles. RefWorks supports most of the styles you may need to use. One style you may be interested in using is the style required by the Canadian Journal of Forest Research
