Taitou village in Shandong province, China was made up of independent peasant families who owned land privately. Each family grew different crops in various plots suited to the land, from rice in moist bottom soils to millet and wheat in flatlands. Though some families owned more land than others, all families had enough diversified land to be largely self-sufficient. The village was part of a network of market towns where farmers sold surplus crops and goods.
