Inukshuks are stone monuments shaped like humans that were traditionally used by Inuit people as landmarks to guide travelers. They symbolize unity and the human spirit, representing how people can accomplish more by working together toward common goals than if each worked alone. Inukshuks are still used today both as landmarks and as symbols of cooperation and community.

2. Inuksuks are stone monuments
that represent humans. The
word means “Image of man”

3. Purpose:
• For direction
• For time immemorial
• In storms they point out the way for
travelers
• They place it at the edge of the river as
a symbol for safe passing

4. Each stone is a separate entity. They
support, and are supported by, the one above and
the one below it. No one piece is any more or less
important than another. Its strength lies in its
unity.

5. The Inukshuk is the
symbol of the human
spirit. They recognize
our ability to succeed
with others, where we
would fail alone. They
remind us of our need
to belong to something
greater than ourselves.
They reinforce our
ability to commit to
common goals.
