8. Madrid surroundings El Monasterio de El Escorial Valle de los Caídos Toledo is the capital of the province of Toledo and of the autonomous communauty of Castile-la-Mancha. It was declared a World Heritage Site for its extensive cultural and monumental heritage as one of the former capitals of the Spanish Empire and place of coexistence of Christian, Jewish and Moorish cultures. Valle de los caídos (the Valley of the Fallen) is a vast and impressive monumental memorial in the municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial conceived by the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco to honour those who fell during the Spanish Civil War .
