“I’m on your side.” Capturing the students’ attention“When your parents and teacher give you a long speech on life lessons, you would think in your mind that they cannot possibly understand how you feel. Well, I am not going to argue with that. The focus today is on you guys. At your age, you are seeking the have developed a stronger sense of who you are. It’s healthy, normal, and the big sign of growing up.”By speaking the students’ mind, the perspective of the lecture is taking the students’ side. The message is sending out an invitation to bring students into the lesson.
“The hidden clue” Building up the personal experience association“All the aspects listed take roles on shaping who we are. Some of the aspects have a greater impact than the others. What catches your attention the most shows what you care for that aspect the most. They can be your clues to your inner thoughts, wishes, or even fears.” This slide provides key words for them to connect to their previous experience. The intention of the question is to bring up an abstract thinking process on elements related to identity.
“The flipside of my identity” Presenting the connection“Here are some sample images of identity charts. The best thing is everyone has his/her way to express himself/herself. Yet, this is a question for you: “is it a bad thing to focus on ourselves? The answer is “it is not when you are also giving other people a fair share of your attention.””By affirming the students that each one of them is unique, the message tries to encourage the students to reach out to the people, the community, and the world around us.
