DONORS AND FUNDERS
FIFTEEN YEARS AGO, Advancement Project began by bringing $1
billion dollars of education funding to overcrowded urban school districts. I am
excited to share that, in our 15th year, we have been instrumental in securing
another billion of new education funding for our most vulnerable students.
It has been immensely gratifying this year to remember all of the campaigns,
partnerships, and impact that make up our collective journey. We’ve turned
them into a poster – unfold this report to see “15 Reasons to Celebrate 15
Years of Advancement Project”.
Looking back at just the past year, some of our wins include:
• With community partners a Student Need Index was created and convinced
the L.A. Unified School District to guide the allocation of $837 million of
Local Control Funding Formula funds to the communities and schools that
need it most. We’ll be bringing this model to districts across California.
• The budget of a city is not just numbers, it can tell a story – a story of power and relationships.
WeBudgetLA.org made the L.A. City budget understandable and useful for community advocates.
Next year, we’ll partner with advocates to ensure that budget decisions are equitable and meet
the needs of all Angelenos.
• Our Community Research Lab has showed more than 500 community leaders across California
how to use data, research, and maps to tell the story of their neighborhoods’ needs and assets.
Our training programs will boost the skills of even more advocates in 2015.
• This past summer’s tragic police shootings of youth of color focused a spotlight on community-
police relations and the need for law enforcement to find a new way to “serve and protect”.
Across the country our work to transform the Los Angeles Police Department and radically change
community-police relations has served as an inspiration and model. Engaging electeds and
police nationwide continues in 2015.
With your support, we are creating a model for the next generation of civil rights progress. We can’t
know what the next 15 years may bring but whenever we can apply our unique combination of policy
analysis, data and research expertise, and ability to bring together diverse people to set a course
for change, we promise to be there.

I am excited to share that, in our 15th year, we have been instrumental in securing another billion of new education funding for our most vulnerable students. It has been immensely gratifying this year to remember all of the campaigns, partnerships, and impact that make up our collective journey. We’ve turned them into a poster – unfold this report to see “15 Reasons to Celebrate 15 Years of Advancement Project”. Looking back at just the past year, some of our wins include: • With community partners a Student Need Index was created and convinced the L.A. Unified School District to guide the allocation of $837 million of Local Control Funding Formula funds to the communities and schools that need it most. We’ll be bringing this model to districts across California. • The budget of a city is not just numbers, it can tell a story – a story of power and relationships. WeBudgetLA.org made the L.A. City budget understandable and useful for community advocates. Next year, we’ll partner with advocates to ensure that budget decisions are equitable and meet the needs of all Angelenos. • Our Community Research Lab has showed more than 500 community leaders across California how to use data, research, and maps to tell the story of their neighborhoods’ needs and assets. Our training programs will boost the skills of even more advocates in 2015. • This past summer’s tragic police shootings of youth of color focused a spotlight on community- police relations and the need for law enforcement to find a new way to “serve and protect”. Across the country our work to transform the Los Angeles Police Department and radically change community-police relations has served as an inspiration and model. Engaging electeds and police nationwide continues in 2015. With your support, we are creating a model for the next generation of civil rights progress. We can’t know what the next 15 years may bring but whenever we can apply our unique combination of policy analysis, data and research expertise, and ability to bring together diverse people to set a course for change, we promise to be there.
