3. Melbourne became a town in 1842 and a city in 1847,
Melbourne got it's name from the British Prime Minister,
Lord Melbourne. When the present of Victoria was
detached from the original Australian colony of New South
Wales in 1851, Melbourne became its capital city. It's major
growth began in the early 1850's, when, after the discovery
of gold at Clunes. Also Bendigo and Ballarat less than100
miles away from Melbourne. In three years the population
of Melbourne increased fourfold to 80,000. Between 1860
and 1900, bloated by the gold rushes, Melbourne
surpassed Sydney as Australia's Largest city. It served as the
temporary capital of Australia from 1901 to 1927 before
the federal parliament could assemble in Canberra. Since
then Melbourne became a majestic and vibrant city with all
attributes of a good wine that get better with age.
4. August 30 is Melbourne's birthday - the day the city was founded when settlers landed on the
north bank of the Yarra River from the schooner Enterprize in 1835. Each year the Melbourne
Day Committee holds events to mark 30 August, the day Melbourne was founded.
This pioneering group was led by Captain John Lancey with Launceston builder George Evans
and his servant Evan Evans, carpenters William Jackson and Robert Hay Marr, ploughman
Charles Wise and blacksmith James Gilbert and his wife Mary.
They started Melbourne by building a thatched storage hut and the clearing of land along the
north bank of the Yarra River. This location today is known as Enterprize Park where Williams
nation are the traditional owners of the land that became Melbourne, including the
Boonwurrung, Woiwurrung, Taungurung and DjadjStreet and Flinders Street meet near the old
Customs House.
The people of the Kulin awurrung people, who gathered in this place for ceremonies and
cultural activities. But it is those from the Enterprize who we acknowledge today as the city's
founders.
Melbourne Day celebrates more than just the day the city was founded. It represents the point
at which the proud community of Melbourne began. And it is a day to celebrate all that makes
Melbourne one of the world's most liveable cities.
5. What is the Melbourne flag?
The City of Melbourne's flag features a white background
divided into four quadrants by a red cross, which is the
cross of St. George, the patron saint of England and taken
from the English flag.
In the centre, a crown is visible, signifying the Australian
city's links to the British Monarchy. Other items featured
are, going from top left clockwise, fleece hanging from a
red ring, a bull, a ship and a whale.
The four cantons (flag) represent the main activities of
which the economy of the City of Melbourne was based
in the mid 19th century. They were wool growing, cattle
raising, shipping and whaling

8. Eureka Tower is a 297.3-metre (975 ft)
skyscraper located in the Southbank precinct
of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Construction
began in August 2002 and the exterior
completed on 1 June 2006. The plaza was
finished in June 2006 and the building was
officially opened on 11 October 2006. The
project was designed by Melbourne
architectural firm Fender Katsalidis Architects
and was built by Grocon (Grollo Australia). The
developer of the tower was Eureka Tower Pty
Ltd, a joint venture consisting of Daniel Grollo
(Grocon), investor Tab Fried and one of the
Tower's architects Nonda Katsalidis. It was the
world's tallest residential tower when
measured to its highest floor, until surpassed
by Ocean Heights and the HHHR Tower in
Dubai. It is now the sixth-tallest after the two
Dubai skyscrapers HHHR Tower and Ocean
Heights
