to 36 million visits to public libraries in NSW in 2010/11

8. Other indicators
–The Internet has made libraries busier – over 3.7 million
bookings per year
–Library staff answer more than 4.6 million requests for
information per annum
–Collections in all formats including books, DVDs, talking
books, CDs and digital items continue to grow. In 2010/11
13.5 million items were held across NSW public libraries,
including over 2 million items in community languages

11. Library Act 1939 - Objects
–to promote, provide and maintain library services and information
services for the people of New South Wales through the State Library
and through co-operation with local libraries…

administration relating to library services .. that are or may be provided

12. Library Act 1939 – Duties of Library Council of
NSW

We are part of the newly created Ministry of Tourism, Major Events and Arts, within the Department of Trade and Investment, Regional Infrastructure and Services. The divisions we look at in more detail during today’s sessions are Mitchell Library, Library Services including Access and Information Branch, Original Materials and Collection Services, and Public Library and Community Learning Services. Run quickly through the functions for all divisions leaving PL & CLS to last. PLS is part of the Public Library and Community Learning Services Division. The other branches are Community Learning, NSW,net, Drug Info @ your library and the Legal Information Access Centre

Many more people use public libraries than are members – to use a computer, read the newspaper, attend an author talk, bring their children to holiday activities and so on
