Presentation delivered by Carol Yuen and Laurence McDonnell at the NSW.net eResources Seminar held at the State Library of New South Wales October 25th 2011.
5. Databases
• Online Database usage is increasing across NSW. After
decreasing across the state between 2007-2010, it went up in
2010-2011. This was driven by about a quarter of NSW Public
Libraries. To quote Ross, 25 NSW Libraries drive 68% of
NSW.net database traffic.
• A major part of this is in Website Design.
• 4 years ago, Warringah had set up it’s first website, and our
aims were to increase online database use and increase
membership.
• 3 years ago we purchased the Webfeat federated search

8. 2009/2010
09/10 Why decreasing usage?
• Laptops in schools?
• Less training by me – more conducted 08/09?
• Speed? – Databases / Federated Searching – was slow
• Too Hard? (Teachers Federation Library)
• Was there decreasing interest in Schools?
• Where has information/Database Literacy come up in NSW High Schools –
Not specifically part of NSW curriculum
• Action Research (NSW) – Very Vague
• All my own work (NSW) – Fitted in with anti-plagiarism – gave Citation
‘Training as opposed’ to ‘Database Training’.
New Australian Curriculum, years K-12 contain requirements to study
Research Skills, including Library and Online Database Use.
9. Web Services
To simply access Library resources, we felt we
needed to push all our resources through one
search box. Warringah attempted this with Web
Feat, a federated search engine prior to Ebsco’s
EHIS, but upgraded in May to a web service
based catalogue.
10. What are Web Services?
• Web services are typically application
programming interfaces (API) or Web APIs that
are accessed via HTTP and executed on a remote
system hosting the requested services.
• Basically – Web Services are publicly available
metadata for remote databases.
• All database/LMS providers use different terms –
Web Services, Discovery Services, Search and
Discovery Layer, Open URL Authentication, Open
API.
• With LMS upgrade, will allow integration of
databases into the catalogue.
13. Encore – The pitch
• Encore creates an entirely new user
experience of your library. It makes finding as
easy as searching, leverages Web 2.0
technologies and practices, and delivers a
complete discovery-to-delivery solution that is
appealing, sophisticated, and just plain fun!
23. In Conclusion
• To get it all together, you need:
1. The web/discovery service.
2. Facets that effectively plug in to your catalogue
(vital!).
3. Proxy Server.
• Big questions for LMS providers are:
1. Can I check what databases you provide web services
for?
2. Where do facets draw information from?
3. Can I integrate my own databases (images, LINCS,
etc)
Our second website improved user access and ‘experience’, we had it professionally done, which is really the way to go. We integrated catalogue search box and federated search box. Stats up the top show improving visits and membership, but I believe that without client development stats would not have improved as much.
*These are the stats from NSW.net for the last 3 years showing the top 5 libraries by database usage. Hornsby has been a regular front runner *08/09 first year Warringah got to the top 5 through a combination of new website, federated search engine, and lots of client development. *09/10, we slipped, still blaming myself. *Lake Macquarie had a very good showing, new website(?). *In May this year we launched Encore, integrating database results with cat searches leading to an amazing increase. Encore only integrates 5 databases, will be increased shortly to all of them. Britannica is one of the databases we incorporate and here our stats went from 721 searches in Feb-April to 6,787 between May and Aug*Woollahra and Bankstown had a strong showing, and talking to Jenny at Bankstown and Fran at Woollahra they attribute most of this to the Ebsco Federated search.
*Just to backtrack to 2009/10, and our decrease in database usage I asked around to see what had changed. Two High School Librarians reported fewer students in Libraries as teachers had started to teach students online research outside of the School Library as students had their own school laptops. Less (zero) focus on databases. Less training by me? Speed – Webfeat was slow, taking up to a minute to return results (complicated javascript and search hosted in US) I called the Teachers Federation because I felt I needed to understand schools use of databases more and they said that using databases was just too hard!!Why do students need to use databases?Old NSW curriculum – Action ResearchAustralian Curriculum, should lead to further increase in database usage
WebFeat was a good introduction, but was too slow, especially with our catalogue item as it was hosted in the US.
pretty much XML meta-data
all we need to plug in with.
Results in Warringah’s new Catalogue search, facets to the left, results to the right
Hovering over article results will bring up abstract, here we can select different (and shortly groups of different) databases. At present only 5 databases allowed in Encore (upgrading), but Ebsco can provide a Web Service (Discovery Service), for multiple databases, in this case ANZRC and masterFile. Results also lead back to hard copy material
WorldCat Local is the new front end for AMLIB, it works by importing a library’s holds from Libraries Australia to World Cat, and adding the databases that the Library subscribes to provide a catalogue overlay.
Some universities have been using web services for a while, Sydney Uni is using Summons from Serials Solutions
Primo – Ex-Libris
Enterprise – Sersi-Dynix, facets on the right
To ensure it has its greatest impact you also need to establish Client Development processes.Big Questions, even though a your database may have a web service does not mean it’s set up to be utilised by your LMS vendor.Facets can come from your bib records, or you item records but depending on how they are set up will equate to how facets are displayed. Your ‘Online’ facet is possiblyyour most important.
