Your name: Caitlin Bergan Cooperating teacher-librarian: Kelly Friedlein
Date: April 21, 2010 School & City: Fisher Grade School
Lesson Title: Encyclopedia 1
Grade level: 3rd Length of lesson: 30 mins

Purpose: (“why” of the lesson; where and how does it fit in the curriculum?)
Students will be exposed to encyclopedias and what kind of information can be found there.

Learning Outcome(s): (what will students be able to do/know by the end of the lesson?)
       Students will…
Demonstrate the ability to look something up in alphabetical order in the encyclopedia, and
scan for facts.

Illinois Learning Standard(s) Addressed:
5.B.1a Select and organize information from various sources for a specific purpose
5.A.1a Identify questions and gather information
5.A.1b Locate information using a variety of resources

Standards for 21st Century Learner Addressed:
1.1.2 Use prior and background knowledge as context for new learning.
1.1.4 Find, evaluate, and select appropriate sources to answer questions.

Materials:
Needed by you: Needed by students:
      Set(s) of Encyclopedias Pencils
      Worksheet
      White Board and Markers

Instructional procedures:
Focusing event: (how will you get the students’ attention?)

Who has used encyclopedias before? Are they like dictionaries? What is different about
them? How do you know which encyclopedia volume do you need?

Input from you: (what are you teaching & how are you delivering the content?)

Encyclopedias are in alphabetical order. You use guidewords to find encyclopedia entries
just like you did with the dictionary. Remember our name game? We first did it by letter
range, and then we had people’s names in alphabetical order. The same structure is used in
        the encyclopedia.

Guided practice: (application of knowledge by students)
We’re going to practice using the dictionary. Remember you will need to take turns. Look up
the things on your worksheet by yourself, and then write down something else you find in
      the encyclopedia that interests you.

Closure (how will you end the lesson?)

What did you find that was interesting? Was there anything that was hard?

Check for understanding (what questions will you ask and when to determine students’
understanding?)

What kinds of things did you read about in the encyclopedia? Is there a great deal of
information? Compared to a dictionary? Compared to a whole book on the same subject?

What’s next? (another related lesson, review, end of unit?)
Lesson on choosing keywords to look up.
