Konrad Wilk is a Software Development Manager at Oracle. His groupâ€™s mission is to make Linux and Xen Project virtualization better and faster. As part of this work, Konrad has been the maintainer of the Xen Project subsystem in Linux, Xen Project maintainer and now also Release Manager for the 4.5 release of the Xen Project Hypervisor. Konrad has been active in the Linux and Xen Project communities for more than 6 years and was instrumental in adding Xen Project support to the Linux Kernel.

CEPH DAY BERLIN - CEPH MANAGEMENT THE EASY AND RELIABLE WAY

Storage systems continue to deliver better performance year after year. High performance solutions are now available off-the-shelf, allowing users to boost their servers with drives capable of achieving several GB/s worth of throughput per host. To fully utilise such devices, workloads with large queue depths are often necessary. In virtual environments, this translates into aggregate workloads coming from multiple virtual machines. Having previously addressed the impact of low latency devices in virtualised platforms, we are now aiming at optimising aggregate workloads. We will discuss the existing memory grant technologies available in Xen and compare trade-offs and performance implications of each: grant mapping, persistent grants and grant copy. For the first time, we will present grant copy as an alternative and show measurements over 7 GB/s, maxing out a set of local SSDs.

This resulted in the effort of containerizing the storage controller. Also, as applications that consume storage are changing over, do we need a scale-out distributed storage systems?

Kubernetes and containerized applications allow development teams to iterate fast, deploy efficiently and operate at scale. Kubernetes allows you to orchestrate containers that are highly available. However, in the case of container reschedule, Kubernetes does not provide a great set of primitives to manage your persistent data along with your application containers. In this talk, we will present some of the challenges associated with managing persistent data in Kubernetes and how we can make day 2 operations easier to manage. We will talk about a couple of approaches to solving data persistence problems in multi-cloud environments. During the demos, we will showcase how we address data replication and data encryption challenges.

RBD: What will the future bring? - Jason Dillaman

In a traditional Xen configuration domain 0 is used for a large number of different functions including running the toolstack(s), backends for network and disk I/O, running the QEMU device model instances, driving the physical devices in the system, handling guest console/framebuffer I/O and miscellaneous monitoring and management functions. Having all these functions in one domain produces a complex environment which is susceptible to shared fate on the failure of any one function, has complex interactions between functions (including resource contention) which makes it difficult to predict performance, and has limited flexibility (such as requiring the same kernel for all device drivers). ""Domain 0 disaggregation"" has been discussed for some time as a way to break out domain 0's functions into separate domains. Doing this enables each domain to be tailored to its function such as using a different kernel or operating system to drive different physical devices. Splitting functions into separate domains removes some of the unintentional interactions such as in-domain resource contention and reduces the system impact of the failure of a single function such as a device driver crash. Although domain 0 disaggregation is not new it is seldom used in practise and much of its use is focussed on providing enhanced security. Citrix XenServer will be moving towards a disaggregated domain 0 in order to provide better security, scalability, performance, reliability, supportability and flexibility. This talk will describe XenServer's “Windsor” architecture and explain how it will provide the above benefits to customers and users. We will present an overview of the architecture and some early experimental measurements showing the benefits.

"Xen Cloud Platform”, Mike McClurg, Senior Engineer, Xen.org Engineering The Xen Cloud Platform is an open-source, enterprise-ready server virtualization platform. It is based on the Xen hypervisor, and represents the common code base for Citrix's XenServer product line. This presentation gives an introduction to XCP, and how it relates to both the Xen hypervisor and to Citrix's XenServer. It covers XCP's XenAPI and how it can be used by two of the most popular cloud orchestration frameworks, CloudStack and OpenStack. Finally, it discusses the XCP "roadmap," and the plans for the future of XCP.

CloudStack - Open Source Cloud Computing Project

The talk is about operating system virtualization technology known as OpenVZ. This is an effective way of partitioning a Linux machine into multiple isolated Linux containers. All containers are running on top of one single Linux kernel, which results in excellent density, performance and manageability. The talk gives an overall description of OpenVZ building blocks, such as namespaces, cgroups and various resource controllers. A few features, notably live migration and virtual swap, are described in greater details. Results of some performance measurements against VMware, Xen and KVM are given. Finally, we will provide a status update on merging bits and pieces of OpenVZ kernel to upstream Linux kernel, and share our plans for the future.
