We recently ran a TalentNZ session at the New Zealand Community Boards Conference in the Bay of Islands (15 and 16 May 2015). The theme of the Conference was ‘Influencing Change’, and it brought together local community board members, mayors, councillors, council staff and other persons who are interested in making a difference in their communities from throughout the country. Our session discussed the role of strategy and why a focus on creating a place where talent wants to live will deliver optimal outcomes for New Zealand. During the session we gave participants five worksheets to further develop their thinking around creating a talent-based economy in their communities. These worksheets are available on our website www.mcguinnessinstitute.org For more on TalentNZ please see: www.talentnz.org For more on the McGuinness Institute see: www.mcguinnessinstitute.org

On Wednesday, 5 October 2016 Wendy McGuinness spoke at the University of Auckland's politics hour. The theme of the discussion was regarding the ethical dilemmas faced by policy advisors. Speakers were encouraged to share their experience or advice with students regarding how to be an 'ethical' policy adviser. The ultimate aim of this session was to inspire students, but to also highlight the challenges that lie ahead, and allow students an insight into how political practitioners can achieve change but sometimes have to compromise.

Giovanni Tonutti recently spoke at the Imagining Digital Future workshop organised by the Center for Knowledge and Innovation Research at Aalto University in Helsinki. Giovanni's delivered a session, Catching up or slipping behind? Are policy makers embracing the potential of data analytics? His presentation focused on Policy in Practice's work promoting the smart use of data to improve the way social policy is designed and delivered. The event looked at some of the challenges policy makers face in unlocking the potential of administrative data, and Giovanni shared how we have been able to help overcome them by combining our policy expertise and unique analytical capabilities. Giovanni said "To be invited to such a high profile international event is testament of the impact that Policy in Practice's work is having, and equally it is a great opportunity to confront ourselves with the work and the challenges that similar organisations face in the wider European context." Assessing and Progressing Digital Literacies as a Strategic Concern
Assessing and Progressing Digital Literacies as a Strategic Concern
Julian Prior
There has been a lot of investment and activity in digital preservation over the last decade and a lot of it has been supported by grant funded activity and research projects. The ‘learn by doing’ approach and the prodigious number of beta systems and project reports have all played their part in helping to mature the digital preservation field - and judging by the changing tone of conferences over the years, the community has come a long way. So far - in fact - that a lot of organisations are now at the stage when theory is less important than action. They need to work out the best implementation paths and make procurement choices. So the economic landscape for digital preservation has shifted and the onus is now on many organisations to look closely at their needs and their objectives and to make investment choices that are sustainable as part of the business needs of their organisation rather than as an adjunct activity that is supported by ‘soft’ research money. Work being taken forward by the 4C Project is looking at providing resources to support organisations to make sustainable digital preservation investment choices and this webinar will describe some of that work. But budgets are hard to secure and digital preservation remains a difficult case to argue so collaboration with like-minded organisations and the establishment of shared services should support the arguments and drive down the cost. This is one of the core messages that underpins the Aligning National Approaches to Digital Preservation (ANADP) initiative and this will also be described and explained during the webinar.

Rose Holley, Special Collections Curator at UNSW Canberra discusses the findings of her research into crowdsourcing based curation. Using the digitised historic Australian Newspapers as an example, she looks at how the functionality and interface was developed in close relationship with the users, and how this led on to text correction of newspaper articles. It is nearly ten years since this pioneering project began and the motivations and achievements of the 50,000 volunteers are examined over this time. She questions how successfully the goal of improving text quality and therefore search has been achieved. She proposes that if a similar project was begun now then artificial intelligence software would be used such as OverProof post OCR correction tool to improve the quality of the text. OverProof has been trained on the manual corrections of the Australian newspaper corpus and trials demonstrate it is able to dramatically improve the quality of the corpus. Volunteer text correction could still continue afterwards for difficult text but the software would do the main donkey work, allowing users to have a better quality search.

Enterprise Knowledge’s Urmi Majumder, Principal Data Architecture Consultant, and Fernando Aguilar Islas, Senior Data Science Consultant, presented "Driving Behavioral Change for Information Management through Data-Driven Green Strategy" on March 27, 2024 at Enterprise Data World (EDW) in Orlando, Florida. In this presentation, Urmi and Fernando discussed a case study describing how the information management division in a large supply chain organization drove user behavior change through awareness of the carbon footprint of their duplicated and near-duplicated content, identified via advanced data analytics. Check out their presentation to gain valuable perspectives on utilizing data-driven strategies to influence positive behavioral shifts and support sustainability initiatives within your organization. In this session, participants gained answers to the following questions: - What is a Green Information Management (IM) Strategy, and why should you have one? - How can Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) support your Green IM Strategy through content deduplication? - How can an organization use insights into their data to influence employee behavior for IM? - How can you reap additional benefits from content reduction that go beyond Green IM?
