2. Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937 in Mumbai. He did his
schooling in Mumbai at the Campion School and the Bishop Cotton School
in Shimla and finished his secondary education at the Cathedral and John
Connon School.
He completed his B.S. in architecture with structural engineering from
Cornell University in 1962.
He started his career in the Tata group in
1962
He initially worked on the shop floor of Tata
Steel, shovelling limestone and handling the
blast furnace

3. Ratan Tata has also served in various organizations in India and abroad.
He is the chairman of two of the largest private-sector-promoted
philanthropic trusts in India.
He is a member of the Indian Prime Minister’s Council on Trade and
Industry. He is the president of the Court of the Indian Institute of Science and
chairman of the Council of Management of the Tata Institute of Fundamental
Research.
He also serves on the board of trustees of Cornell
University and the University of Southern California.
Early Career
4. Mr Tata serves on the board of directors of Alcoa, and is also on the
international advisory boards of Mitsubishi Corporation, JP Morgan
Chase, Rolls-Royce, Temasek Holdings and the Monetary Authority of
Singapore.
He also serves on the program board of the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation's India AIDS initiative.
He completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business
School in 1975.
In 1981, Ratan was named director of Tata Industries, the Group's other
holding company.

• Tata Teleservices.
o During his tenure, the group’s revenues grew manifold, totalling
over $100 billion in 2011-12.

Tata motors acquired Jaguar Land Rover .
Tata Steel acquired Corus which have turned Tata from a largely India-
centric company into a global business, with 65% revenues coming from
abroad.

9. On 28th December 2012, Ratan Tata retired from the Tata
group. It also happened to be his 75th birthday.
He received the Padma Bhushan in 2000

2004 - Honorary Degree of Doctor of Technology by Asian Institute of
Technology.
2005 - Honorary Doctor of Science by University of Warwick.
2006 - FIRST Magazine Award for Responsible Capitalism.
2006 - Awarded the 26th Robert S. Hatfield Fellow in
Economic Education by Cornell University.
2007 - Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy by Carnegie Endowment for
International Peace.
2008 - Honorary Doctor of Science by Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
2008 - Honorary Doctor of Law by University of Cambridge.
2008 - Recipient of the 'Global Indian Award' at the NASSCOM Global
Leadership Awards .
2009 - Ratan Tata was knighted as a Knight Commander of the Order of the
British Empire.
2010 - Business Leader of the Year by The Asian Awards.
2010 - Honorary Doctor of Laws by Pepperdine University.
2010 - Legend in Leadership Award by Yale University.
2012 - Honorary Degree by The University of New South Wales.
