3. STRATEGIC PLAN FOR RED BEACH SCHOOL
Our Community wants
our learners to be…
Striving to be resilient,
Life Long Learners, who
are actively involved and
contribute positively to
our community.
Striving to be effective
communicators who
relate well to others, and
are connected to their
world.
Celebrating who they are,
their learning, their
community, and their world.
Over the next 3 years
we will strategically
focus on...
How resilience links to
the Life Long Learner
qualities and have
strategies for overcoming
personal setbacks when
participating within a
community.
Empowerment of e-
learning to sustain
and innovate the use of
technologies as part of an
overt
focus on collaborative
teaching and learning.
Improve and celebrate
learning outcomes for
students, particularly Māori,
Pasifika, and children with
special needs.
With the goal to help
our learners...
Reflect on their own
learning processes and to
learn how to learn.
Be effective users of
communication tools who
actively seek, use and
create knowledge.
Learn and achieve personal
excellence.

5. 21ST CENTURY LEARNING AT RED BEACH
It is our aim to develop in our students the capability, skills
and attitudes that will enable them to be learners for life.
We want our young people to grow and develop, knowing
and applying the qualities and characteristics of lifelong
learners.
Our overall goal at Red Beach School is to empower
students to achieve and make a difference. Technology is
an essential element to keeping today‟s students
engaged, therefore the objective of Bring Your Own Device
(BYOD) is to develop an environment that caters for 21st
century learning.
6. WHY IS E-LEARNING IMPORTANT
New Zealand Curriculum (2007, p.36) states that e-Learning may:
• “assist the making of connections by enabling students to enter
and explore new learning environments, overcoming barriers of
distance and time”
• “facilitate shared learning by enabling students to join or create
communities of learners that extend well beyond the classroom”
• “assist in the creation of supportive learning environments by
offering resources that take account of individual, cultural, or
developmental differences”
• “enhance opportunities to learn by offering students virtual
experiences and tools that save them time, allowing them to take
their learning further”
7. WHY IS E-LEARNING IMPORTANT
At Red Beach we feel that e-Learning also provides:
• A vehicle for personalising learning in ways that
ensure each student is fully engaged in learning and is
successful in attaining established learning standards.
• Access to digital content and digital learning
environments that provide multiple pathways to
learning.
• The opportunity for learners to collaborate with
teachers and peers and to express themselves and their
ideas most effectively.

16. YEAR 4/5/6 HORIZON GROUP DEBATE TOPIC:
That RBS should encourage students to
bring their own device to school to be
used throughout the day
WALHT: Look at topics from other peoples’
viewpoints (perspectives)
17. WHAT IS BYOD?
How can we sustain the level of technology to support this
direction in learning?
• Bring your own device (BYOD), or sometimes BYOT (bring your own
technology), or BYOB (bring your own browser) refers to technology
models where students and staff bring a personally-owned device to
school for the purpose of learning.
• The over-arching purpose at Red Beach to introduce BYOD is the
way in which increased access to a personal device can enable
inclusive and more personalised learning pathways through the
curriculum.

18. RATIONALE
Choice
• Learners are diverse. Learning styles and preferences vary and we wish to recognise this
by allowing learners to choose the device and applications most suitable for them.
Anywhere/Anytime
• Teaching and learning occurs inside and outside the classroom. We want to empower
learners to utilise tools for learning no matter where they are.
Preparing for the future
• Our students will move into BYOD environments at intermediate, college, university, and
the work place
Flexible Learning
• The nature of learning is changing. We are creating flexible learning environments that
facilitate collaborative and individual learning
Digital Fluency
• We are empowering teachers and students to become digitally fluent and responsible
users of technology
19. BYOD MYTHS
• BYOD deepens the digital divide
“Students who do not have personal technology devices have greater access to
school-owned technology tools when students who bring their own devices to
school are no longer competing for that access
• BYOD will result in students engaging in dangerous activities.
Our students are living in a digital world with ubiquitous access to
technology. “Without BYOD, at the end of each school day, students leave school
and immediately turn on their devices and explore the web”. We need to prepare
them for the digital world in which they live.

20. YEAR 5/6 OPTIONAL TRIAL
Important to trial BYOD first
• 2 Year 5/6 classrooms in Term 2
• The infrastructure is now in place (N4L, Ultra Fast
Broadband and new wireless system).
• Logistics of BYOD are reviewed at the end of the trial
• We encourage parents not to buy a device but to bring in
what they already have (see minimum requirements)
• BYOD at Red Beach is optional not compulsory
• We have talked to other schools and their advice is to
manage the roll out in stages
21. MINIMUM DEVICE REQUIREMENTS
• Battery life – 5-6 hours to get through a school day
without recharging
• Weight – light enough for your child to carry easily to
school
• Wireless access – must have wireless access to the
internet
• Must be able to save to the device via hard drive
• Lap tops - must have up-to-date anti-virus software
• No gaming hardware such as PSPs or mobile phones
• Parents responsibility to make sure device meets
minimum requirements
• If you would like advice about a device we would be
happy to provide information
22. SAFETY/SECURITY GUIDELINES
Tracking Internet Activity
• The school has invested in a WatchGuard system which tracks all internet
activity on your child‟s device
Cyber safety for students/teachers and parents
• Cyber safety is already part of classroom programmes
• Professional development for teachers from Digital Technologies Contract
• Organise Netsafe to speak to community
23. SAFETY/SECURITY GUIDELINES
Classroom Environment
• Lockable storage cupboards
• Expectations will be set as part of the classroom culture
• Devices to be locked away at morning tea and lunch time. Students need to
play!
Sharing
• Your child may be involved in collaborative group work. Your child will be in
charge of his/her device, and with your child‟s permission another child could
work on the device with your child.
• We want to promote a „share the screen‟ environment
24. SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS
Parents are responsible for
• Insurance for their device (check with your insurance provider)
• Naming equipment
• Sending a device that meets minimum requirements
Child Responsibility
• Charging device at home
• Responsible for device at school
How do I keep my child safe going to school?
• We recommend devices are kept in bags out of sight
