Report Summary
European spinners now have their eyes fixed on winter 2011, when they hope that the beginning of
a return to normal demand for the fashion industry's products will trickle down to producers of high
quality yarns. Although the number of visitors to European yarn fairs continues to fall, the mood at
Pitti Filati in Florence, Italy, and Expofil in Paris, France, has been described as 'positive', and
solid business was done. Fabric manufacturers want to be sure of having enough yarn of the right
quality when the upturn comes.
Italian yarn sales in 2008 were down by 10% on the year before. But spinners have not allowed the
difficult economic situation to interrupt their drive to offer ever finer and more luxurious products.
The accent for autumn/winter 2010/11 has been on noble fibres, with alpaca now challenging
cashmere as the noble fibre of choice. Ingenious blending of fibres has added to the soft, luxurious
feel. New spinning techniques are being deployed to produce yarns which are lighter, airier and softer.
Thailand's Lucky Spinning and three European spinners are producing cotton yarn using the new air
vortex technology. Todd & Duncan has made very fine lightweight woollen spun cashmere even lighter
by spinning it with a soluble yarn which is dissolved after knitting.
However, the downturn continues to force mills into reorganisation so they will have the financial
muscle to profit from any upturn. The Scottish cashmere specialist Todd & Duncan has been sold to
the important Chinese cashmere company Ningxia Zhongyin. Two of Italy's prime spinners, Zegna
Baruffa and Filatura di Chiavazza, are planning to amalgamate their businesses. Both these moves
are being heralded as positive strategies for the future.
