II. REPORT SYNOPSIS
Foreword
High Throughput Screening (HTS) is the process by which thousands of compounds that possess the
potential of emerging as a new drug are tested using automated machines.
The main objective of carrying out HTS is to remove the inactive compounds at the initial stage and
accumulate the active compounds called hits.
These hits are then put through various tests to obtain the leads. The process of HTS when employed on
half a million compounds, for example, would provide 300 - 400 hits and this in turn would create 3 to 4
Leads.
Strategic partnerships between pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies are the order of the day, and
the trend is increasing globally.
Another significant trend is the alliances between Pharma and Biotech companies and information
technology companies such as Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, Sun, and Infosys, etc.
The computer platforms generated by such companies help in managing and analyzing the huge amounts
of data produced through High Throughput Screening (HTS) and other computational techniques.
Effective R&D strategy involves efficient data management and implementation plans.
The new technologies promise improved efficacy, decreased toxicity in patients, and reduced time frames
and expenditures.
Changing business paradigms brought in by globalization and liberalization are making pharmaceutical
companies change strategies for sustenance and growth.
Many companies are venturing into HTS studies instead of going for alliances, to become self sufficient and
reduce costs.
The R&D wings are increasingly becoming target oriented to face the numerous challenges posed in the
drug discovery and development industry.
Technology and Product Segmentation
Global HTS market is segmented by technology into Ultra High Throughput Screening, High Content
Screening, Bioinformatics and Lab-on-a-Chip/Micro fluidics segments; and by products into HTS Services,
HTS Tools, Other HTS Products and/or Services.

Analysis by Technology
Ultra High Throughput Screening
Ultra High Throughput Screening (uHTS) is carried out in cell based assays under various physiological
environments.
This technology finds application in screening of libraries, holding compounds in millions. When counter
screening is employed in cell assays with orthogonal structure, the false positives can be eliminated with
ease.

HIGH THROUGHPUT SCREENING – MARKET OUTLOOK
Global HTS market is projected to grow at a high rate of XX.XX % compounded annually from 2005 through
2020.
This growth is especially driven by the advancements in HTS technologies and the increasing usage of
innovative techniques such as Bioinformatics and Lab-on-a-Chip/Microfluidics.
The success of Human Genome Project and latest findings in genomics and proteomics are creating an
enormous market for HTS by identifying huge number of drug targets.
Currently, automation in HTS industry is in high gear. The companies are investing heavily in laboratory
automation products such as HTS software, database systems, robotics arms and robot based workstations.
The United States is projected to remain the leader in global HTS market until the end of the analysis
period, slightly losing market share from of about XX.XX % in 2010 to XX.XX % in 2020. At the same time
emerging markets including Europe and Asia-Pacific are expected to increase their global market shares.
The European market for HTS is expected to register similar CAGR as that of Asia-Pacific during the analysis
period. While the United States is reaching market saturation for HTS, many major companies including
Biotage AB, Kibron Inc., Biacore International, Evotec AG, Cerep SA, ID Business Solutions Ltd., and Sygnis
Pharma AG are driving the growth of the market in this region.
The UK and Germany are expected to lead the market and account for more than half of the total European
market. Switzerland, The Netherlands, France, Belgium, Sweden and Italy are projected to be the promising
markets in the near future…..

IV. PRODUCT/TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH
High Throughput Screening (HTS) is one of the several tools available for the discovery of a new drug. Paul
Ehrlich used HTS almost a century ago to identify effective compounds for the treatment of syphilis.
Majority of drugs in the market were discovered by using natural product screening. These drugs include
anticancer agents, antibacterial agents and anti parasitic agents.
Conventional screening methods proved to be ineffective in terms of cost, and screening lost its charm,
during the late 1970s and 1980s, as innovative methods began to generate larger number of discovery
leads.
The process of utilization of screening technology on chemical compounds for therapeutical and
pharmaceutical usage is being carried out globally for the past 35 years.
The screening process utilizes the properties of chemical compounds which are made to react with other
compounds, to accomplish the invention of the wonder drug.
This can be considered as the journey of a chemical compound in transforming into an effective drug. The
chemicals that do not comply with the primary screening process are rejected and kept in storage for some
other pharmaceutical use.
With increase in the varieties of diseases attacking mankind, the role of pharmaceutical industries is
becoming more and more challenging.
This has led to enormous improvement and sophistication in medicine discovery, pharmaceutical business,
and research and development, etc.
All these transformations in pharmaceutical industry have further developed the screening technology. The
screening technology has undergone rapid changes to adapt to modern requirements.
The main changes acquired in the screening technology encompass improvements in the instruments,
machineries and testing procedures.
Screening started to regain its importance in the pharmaceutical industry during the mid 1990s. Re-
establishment of HTS is driven by the following factors:
Identification of large number of drug targets as a result of molecular genetics and recombinant DNA
usage
Availability of cloned genes that have rejuvenated the screening procedures
Improvements in combinatorial chemistry that generate more compounds for screening
Technological advances in biotechnology that have led to the implementation of cost effective
screening systems with the help of innovative detection systems
Automation in screening process that facilitate the screening of more samples in a short period of time
Computerized data handling and analysis
