(Fil. 4:16,17, 19)

Both. (click) From all of this it can be seen that loving leads to giving. But, interestingly enough, it is also true that giving often leads to loving. In the words of G. Timothy Johnson, “Some say dedicate the heart and the money will follow; but our Lord put it the other way around. ‘Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.’ If your treasure is dedicated, your heart will be dedicated. If it is not, it simply won’t. It is as simple as that.” Sincere stewardship leads to deeper spiritual commitment.
Why does genuine generosity produce a spiritual growth spurt? Because money is often a competitor with Christ for our affection. How we handle our finances is tied to our relationship with God. In the words of our Savior, “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other… You cannot serve both God and money.” (Matthew 6:24) Christians who do not practice generosity do not love God enough to put Him first and don’t trust Him enough to believe He will take care of them if they do. Those who aren’t giving generously are only giving lip service. John Maxwell states, “we can give without loving but we cannot love without giving.”
What Principles Can We Learn? We should give generously, ask others to give generously, and pray that they will give generously. The generosity of leaders should be given as an example to others. Generosity should come from wholehearted spiritual consecration to God. Generous giving results in God’s glory. Knowing that what we give and even the desire to give comes from God, we should give Him praise and thanksgiving. Generous giving results in our joy. Generous God-centered, purpose-driven Christians and churches are filled with exuberance. Giving is not to be a one-time act, but a continuous commitment to God. We must trust God to supply but we are also to be used by God to bring in that supply.
Let’s review. Why should we disciple believers in stewardship? There are four main reasons: 1) to glorify God, 2) to follow God’s example, 3) to enrich God’s people, and 4), to resource God’s mission. Continually go over these motives in your mind, because they will help you stimulate stewardship with confidence and character. I am not a fund-raiser. The very phrase sounds negative to me. I don’t like asking for money; the very thought makes me cringe. . And yet part of my responsibility is encouraging churches and individuals to financially support the ministry of the Michigan Baptist General Conference. Using the above motives gives me confidence in that function. Why? Because I know that… (next slide)
