The Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) was a government agency created in 1972 to provide Congress with objective analysis of complex science and technology issues. However, it was defunded in 1995. The document argues that resuscitating the OTA would help address current problems like the politicization of science and the influence of corporate interests. Reinstating the OTA could help ensure policymakers have access to unbiased information and expand the range of policy options. Doing so would cost less than $50 million annually and help restore integrity to the scientific process.
