Building Application Services
Current approach does not move at cloud speed

Given a Cloud Infrastructure, you still need to
design the service to deliver an application
• Get all the Expert resources • Test deployment workflow
• Design architecture and deployment • Publish and activate
• Build packages

The average time to deploy an IT service from the time of first request is 10 weeks1

  1. In order to deliver on the “Services Anywhere” promise, organizations will have to think differently about IT. No longer will they be solely a builder of internal infrastructure and services but will also need to broker or consume 3rd party/external services. The key will be understanding the unique requirements (e.g. availability, cost, performance, regulatory) of each service in the organization’s portfolio and address the SLAs in the most efficient and cost effective way; and at the same time, maintain compliance with policies. This will be done by creating the right mix of on-premise and off-premise services that leverage the best of traditional IT, private, managed, and public cloud. So what is the implication for IT? Opportunities - but at the same time, risks. Agility - but at the same time, technology is now being sourced from multiple places which puts additional burden on security, management and automation. And the way infrastructure is built, applications developed, and information delivered, is changing. organizations will need to implement a hybrid delivery strategy leverage cloud services as part of their IT delivery and consumption strategy; combined with the traditional means to build and consume IT servicesCombining both into a seamless experience
  2. For customers who are ready to build a cloud, only HP offers CloudSystem. CloudSystem is the industry’s most complete, integrated, open solution for building and managing cloudsIt enables organizations to build and manage cloud services without having to know, or care, whether those services come from HP CloudSystem’s own “on-premises” resources or from the public domainIt supports all cloud service models, so clients can use it to get started with self-service infrastructure provisioning and grow to add applications and service brokering across hybrid environmentsThe automation in CloudSystem allows you to provision complex services in just minutes, from infrastructure to application. And it provides complete lifecycle management from provisioning to retirement. It reduces the complexity of getting started with cloud since it’s delivered as a complete, integrated solutionBut CloudSystem is not monolithic. It is heterogeneous to avoid vendor lock-in and protect your investment.CloudSystem works within your environment – you can customize it to link in to your operational model. And with build-in out of the box bursting, it can scale as you need it to. Finally, CloudSystem lets you reduce total cost of ownership up to 56% by using system resources more efficiently and by automating time consuming manual tasks. So, how does it work. CloudSystem automates the entire lifecycle of cloud servicesCloudSystem is based on proven, market-leading HP Cloud Service Automation and HP Converged Infrastructure.
  3. However, despite all the good intentions, customers struggle to move at cloud speed and reap benefits as soon as possible. I would like to spend the rest of the time talking about this issue and about what HP has done to ensure that we can help you overcome it.IDC has found that the time to deploy a service is on average 10 weeks. This is clearly not good enough when we are talking about the need to move at cloud speed. Most cloud implementations to-date have focused on what is commonly known as infrastructure-as-a-service or IaaS. This is a great step forward which carries value, but the reality is that business users want business applications, not servers. The reason it can take 10 weeks to deliver a service is because even if you have the cloud infrastructure ready you still need to design how applications will be deployed on top of it. Think about trying to deploy SAP, SharePoint or WebSphere. You need to get all the experts resources – server, storage, network, app, middleware, etc. Then you need them all to design how the deployment will look like. You then need to build all the deployment assets – scripts, installation packages and test them all working in one coordinated workflow. Then you need to publish this in your service catalog, activate it and manage the lifecycle of the application while it is running. This entire process – needless to day – takes time, but moreover it is error-prone with too many hand-offsNot repeatableExpensive due to high reliance on expert resourcesActually requires you to have all the expertise in-houseHow can you ensure quality and performance?
  4. Introducing Cloud Maps. We at HP have taken our vast experience borne out of hundreds of engagements of deploying infrastructure and applications for customers. We coupled it with our reach into the ISV community and condensed all this knowledge into pre-packages application templates. So rather than building an Oracle deployment from the ground up using the process we described before you can simply get it from HP, already built and tested.
  5. Cloud Maps allow you to now quickly create application environments. Instead of spending up to 10 weeks going through the manual process, it often takes less than an hour from the time you obtain a Cloud Map until the application is available for consumption by your users. Over and above the time savings you also getRepeatable and proven deployments. We have tested everything so it works out of the box. This means you reduce your risk and can feel confident that what you deployed – because of all the knowledge and IP we put into the cloud maps – will provide the performance and reliability you needFunctionality you would not have had before. You can now check for compliance and deploy patchesAll-in-all, we estimate that you save up to 200 staff hours – per application!Cloud Maps put you in a position when you can now offer a rich catalog of business applications, rather than just Windows or Linux servers
  6. And Cloud Maps are easy to consume. We have a broad range of maps for all use models and for many leading business applications (which I will touch on later). You can download them and use them straight away. If you do not find what you need or you need to customize them – we can help you. We have services professionals you can engage to do this. We can even provide support options. Once you downloaded a map, you import it using a template or a wizard, you supply some specific input parameters that are unique to your environment. This deploys the map onto Cloud System or CSA and the application is ready for deployment. Again – all this often takes less than an hour.
  7. I mentioned before the breadth of our portfolio of Cloud Maps. Leading business applications from the most prominent and common ISVs in the industry are available
  8. The other aspect to our broad portfolio is all the usage scenarios we support. We have maps to deploy infrastructure, which is still very relevant as well as applications. We have maps that focus on provisioning only as well as those which implements lifecycle functions such as patching and compliance checks.Definitions: Infrastructure-focus:  Cloud service designs for server, storage and network infrastructure for with basic application deployment. Uses the Cloud Service Automation for Matrix option for operating system and basic application deployment.Application-focus: Cloud service design for application deployment, including auto-configuration. Includes from basic to advanced application deployment options, server provisioning, and operating system deployment using Cloud Service Automation software. Advanced application deployment provides custom HP-developed silent install/uninstall and supports complex configuration options.Lifecycle-focus: Cloud service designs for server, storage and network infrastructure with advanced application deployment and lifecycle management. Uses HP Cloud Service Automation for application deployment, patching, code release and compliance service design and configuration; automatically connects to Matrix Operating Environment for infrastructure provisioning. Advanced application deployment and lifecycle management includes scripts, workflows and policies for deployment, support for complex configuration options, and pre-configured policies and workflows for application patching, code release and compliance.
  9. You can now check for compliance and deploy patchesAll-in-all, we estimate that you save up to 200 staff hours – per application! There really is nothing else like Cloud Maps in the industry today. The closest thing to them is application cloning (using virtualization tools), where clients take a snapshot of a ‘golden image’ at a particular point in time and then copy them over and over. While this is a good basic approach, it has several drawbacksIt only addresses deployment. You still need to go through the entire design and build process to get to the point where you have a stable, quality “golden image”. So you do not get the time savings. Whereas Cloud Maps’ greatest advantage is in accelerating the design phaseIt only supports deployment onto virtual servers whereas Cloud Maps support both virtual and physical serversIn a cloned environment, the golden image hardcodes everything about the clone. With a Cloud Map, while base parameters are provided, users can define specific configuration details at service creation. So, if they need more memory, it’s as simple as creating another configuration set. With cloning you need to instantiate the “golden image” make your changes and save another copy of the image. Which means that there are as many images as there are permutations needed by users. With Cloud Maps you have one map but several configuration sets

  11. We understand that customers will evolve to cloud at different speeds. Customers who are just starting to virtualize are probably not ready for private clouds. They need to first focus on standardization, consolidation, and virtualization. Gains in these areas lay the groundwork for cloud-based approaches.Generally, customers who have already virtualized significant parts of their infrastructure are the most ready for private cloud—the next logical step in IT evolution. The most advanced customers are those who can understand the full vision of cloud and the possibility to broker services across many different delivery models. Most customers are not ready for that today, but they should understand that ultimate vision. Regardless of where you are on your journey, HP offers solutions that meet your needs today while laying the groundwork for future expansion. Cloud Maps enable you to move along the maturity curve by accelerating cloud service design as well as offering the capabilities to deploy not just IaaS but PaaS and lifecycle capabilities
  12. To summarize, the combination of Cloud System with Cloud Maps is where HP stands out. We can enable you to deploy a private business applications cloud and save you weeks in the process. We offer the industry’s only pre-packaged, customizable application templates. We packaged our knowledge, which spans decades of experience, and are now bringing it to you so you can create a portfolio which offers leading business applications, supports multiple usage models, supports infrastructure and applications, provisioning and lifecycle management and you can be confident that what you deploy will have the performance and reliability you seek
