Parent  proficiency refers to how well parents meet kids’ needs and support their academic success.    www.drlourdes.net
Parent  proficiency is a  combination of meeting  children’s physical, emotional,  and social needs and effective parental involvement with the school.  www.drlourdes.net
There are five levels of  measurement for parent proficiency.  www.drlourdes.net 0 1 2 3 4
Sub-par Proficiency Parents play a limited role in the children’s lives.  Children  practically live on their own  in the more extremely negative circumstances. This situation is more rare in the United States and more prevalent in under-developed countries.    www.drlourdes.net 0
Marginal Proficiency Parents meet their children’s basic physical, emotional and social needs,  but do not believe they need to play a significant, direct role  in their children’s education. Teachers have little success motivating these parents to do much beyond sending their children to school.   www.drlourdes.net 1
Limited Proficiency Parents provide for their children’s basic physical, emotional and social needs but have  limited involvement in their children’s education.  Because of an inconsistent level of involvement, teachers perceive these parents as having unmet potential for improving their children’s learning outcomes.      www.drlourdes.net 2
Target Proficiency Parents provide for their children’s basic needs and  consistently create a home environment which is conducive to learning . They make reading a family norm, supervise homework and connect productively with teachers.  They build character traits such as responsibility, persistence, a strong work ethic, and the ability to delay gratification. Teachers perceive these parents as integrated partners.     www.drlourdes.net 3
Exemplary Proficiency Parents go beyond proficiency by demonstrating  a sense of responsibility regarding their  children’s school improvement efforts.  They assume leadership roles in their children’s schools.   Teachers perceive these parents as highly motivated advocates who often go  beyond expectations to help the school accomplish its mission and goals.    .     www.drlourdes.net 4
