Researchers from the Perelman School of
Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania have
concluded a study that suggests that hearing
loss increases atrophy of the brain’s gray matter,
resulting in older adults having to work harder to
understand speech, especially when it comes to
understanding more complex sentences.
(This research appears in the latest edition of the Journal of
Neuroscience and was funded by the National Institutes of
Health).
"Your hearing ability directly affects how the brain processes
sounds, including speech," says lead author Jonathan Peelle, PhD,
research associate. "Preserving your hearing doesn't only protect
your ears, but also helps your brain perform at its best."
If you, or someone you know or love, are showing signs of a
diminished ability to hear (increasing the volume of the TV,
thinking people are mumbling and/or experiencing ringing in the
ears) a hearing test should performed by your chosen hearing
professional.
If hearing loss is indicated as a result of testing, your audiologist
may recommend treatment for the prevention of further loss (ear
plugs) or recommend being fitted with hearing aids.
