2. FONTS
I spent a long time looking for the right font for my
main titles. I was going to use the ones on the front
cover but I thought it would take some of the affect
the front page brings. I wanted a font that looks
indie/Urban but something not too hard to read. I
went on ‘DaFont’ and found the font ‘Plane Crash’.I
really liked this one as it has this style to it that just
makes the whole page look cool and urban which
exactly what I wanted. When I got feedback from
other pupils in the school, almost everyone of them
commented on the font of the title and how
attractive it is. I didn’t want to overuse this font as it
would make the page look really dull. I decieded to
use the ‘Silom’ font again as it looks Indie and it is
very easy to read. I wasn’t to fussed on the urban look
for the writing, as I believe ‘Plane Crash’ already
brings that to the page, so I just wanted something
easy to read.
3. Colour Scheme
I wanted to keep a certain type of colour scheme
throughout the contents and the double page spread
to relate the pages together as they share the same
article. I tried out the colour red s it would stand
out, but it looked too much. It’s quite a big and bold
colour which is very handy for banners but not so good
on writing as it was very hard to read the text and it
also took away the importance of the picture as the
audience would be to busy attempting to read the
writing. I tried black, but the feedback I got from the
pupils who read my magazine draft said it made the
page look too boring. I then tried the colour blue on my
draft as it’s an easy colour to read, and it stands out
from the background picture. I was going to put
everything in blue, but I felt that it made the page look
to busy and unattractive so I put certain columns and
letters in blue to keep the audience’s attention.
4. The Picture
I spent along time trying to decide on a good contents
picture, as I felt it had to relate to my double page spread.
If I didn’t match my other pages, the picture would look
really random and just thrown in. I chose these Ollie to be
in this band, as he was wearing urban clothing (Chino’s
and a hoodie) which would match the style of my
magazine . I was going to have Ollie in another boy band
as it’s my audiences most popular type of band but I
thought it would clash with the band on the front page.
When I got some pupils to review my magazine, a few of
the girls mentioned the whole magazine being male
dominated. I didn’t realise this until it was mentioned but I
thought it was crucial, as without a girl being in my
magazine, all the females in my audience would be turned
off and discriminated which means I’d lose half my
readers. I then chose Harriet to do a due with Ollie as she
had the Indie look to her image as well. I chose the
background, as it was quite plain, easy to place text on it,
and matched my magazines style by having cracked tiles.
5. Professional Advice
The professional magazine editor analysed one of
my content’s drafts and gave me the following
feedback and improvements:
•There wasn’t enough pages in my magazine
•The paragraph about ‘The Strike’
I took his advise on board, and added another
column of pages into my contents, as it had hardly
any pages in it, so it was hardly worth getting. To
improve the paragraph about ‘The Strike’, I
changed the writing to make it more relavant on
their sucsess and I also turned it sideways to, fill up
blank space, too make the page look less formal
and more appealing for teenagers.
