For those who may not be familiar, Regional Rotary Foundation coordinators are zone leaders who promote Foundation activities and serve as key resources for Rotary’s district leaders. - LindsayToday’s webinar will focus on the following learning goals:First, we will learn about the nomination process for the Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award and the Alumni Association of the Year Awards.Next, we will clarify due dates associated with these awards.Finally, we will have a discussion and questions period to allow an exchange of ideas and best practices.
- LindsayKendall will now present information on the first award, the Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award. KendallThank you, Lindsay.
- KendallThe Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award started out as an award for the achievements of Ambassadorial Scholars, but was expanded in 2001 to include all Rotary Foundation alumni. This includes Rotary Peace Fellows, GSE and VTT participants, Global, District and Package grant recipients, and several others. If you have any questions about a potential candidates eligibility, please contact us at alumni@rotary.org.The award is a great way for Rotarians to recognize outstanding alumni, both in their region or zone and globally. The award is also an opportunity for Rotary to reconnect with distinguished alumni.One good example is Michael Deal. Contacts he made through the nomination process led to him joining Rotary. Michael Deal is an international development consultant working as president and CEO of Crown Agents, USA in the Washington, DC area. He had a long career with the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in both the USA and in Latin America. Although he has not been a global winner, he was a zone award winner. Lindsay would you like to launch our first poll?
- RRFC FerrillThank you Lindsay.In 2009-10 Maya Ajmera was the Zone 33 Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award and my district decided to re-nominate her for the 2013-14 Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award.There are many reasons why Maya was a strong candidate for the award. -She was heavily impacted by impoverished communities and it’s impact on children and youth during her scholarship. This led her to start the Global Fund for Children.-She is a global advocate for children and youth, a children’s book author, and a social entrepreneur.-Currently she holds two academic appointments – she is a visiting scholar and professional lecturer at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at John Hopkins University in Washington, D.C. and the inaugural social entrepreneur in residence and visiting professor of the practice of public policy at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.She was an Ambassadorial Scholar sponsored by District 5240, California, USA to study at St. Xavier’s College in District 3140, India. Maya will attend the RI Convention in Sydney this year and accept her award. She will be speaking at the plenary session on Tuesday, 3 June. Now Kendall will talk about the nomination process.
- KendallThank you, RRFC Ferrill. Here is the overview of the nomination process for the Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award. The Rotary Foundation Trustees ask that RRFCs promote the award and encourage their districts to nominate an outstanding alumnus in their areas. Any Rotarian can suggest a nominee to their district, but the nominee needs to be endorsed by the District Governor. District Governors are eligible to nominate one candidate annually. These nomination documents are then submitted to their RRFC, who is responsible for the nomination process for his or her zone/region and should notify district governors of the zone level deadline and procedures. Each RRFC is eligible to nominate one candidate representing his or her area annually. If your nominee was not selected as the global winner, they can be nominated again. As mentioned before, Maya Ajmera was a zone winner in the past before becoming the global winner.Foundation staff are available to support and provide information to help the nomination process. I am your main contact for assistance, so please send your questions to me. RRFC Ferrill, would you mind sharing some information about the RRFC nomination process?
- RRFCFerrillThanks, Kendall. Here is asuggested nomination process for RRFCs. They are encouraged to form a selection committee. The committee can include prominent Rotarians or alumni from the zone or region.Districts have been informed of the award by the Foundation, but it helps them to receive encouragement and reminders from the RRFC to identify outstanding alumni who have made a sustainable global impact in their career. The nominee’s documents need to reach Rotary Headquarters by 30 June 2014. RRFCs need to set their own submission deadline earlier and inform the districts of the date. We also encourage third year RRFCs to work with the incoming 2014-15 RRFCs as they will be part of the global alumni awards process.The 2014-15 Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award winner will be announced sometime in October. The 2015-16 award schedule will be the same as this year. This means that nominations for 2015-16 alumni awards will be due 30 June 2015. The change in deadlines was made by the trustees in April 2013.
- RRFCFerrillClub level Rotarians, district leaders and residing alumni may have a good idea of a potential candidate. However, if districts have a difficult time picking candidates, they may be interested in exploring Rotary’s list of distinguished alumni. Many of them have not yet won a Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award. Here are some examples of alumni who have made significant contributions to humanity: Kathleen Koch – She was an Ambassadorial scholar to Dijon, France. Besides being an award-winning journalist and best-selling author, she was a CNN general assignment correspondent for 18 years. In 2011 she began a campaign to collect letters of support for those impacted by the tsunami in Japan.Mark Turrentine – He has been part of a matching grant, global grant, and VTT. He is a surgeon specializing in congenital heart disease at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, IN, USA.P. Mona Khanna – or Dr. Mona – was a GSE member to Switzerland. She is a medical doctor and an Emmy award-winning medical journalist dedicated to raising health literacy and promoting healthy behaviors. Francis Moloi – He was an Ambassadorial scholar to the US and the former High Commissioner of South Africa to IndiaNow Kendall will share some final points on the Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award.

It is very important to remember the following items:-Once again, all zone nominations are due to arrive at RIno later than 30 June 2014.-All living Foundation alumni are eligible.Rotaryhighly encourages electronic submission of nomination documents and all applications must be typed. The candidate should be informed of the nomination in advance as they are required to receive the award in person at the RI convention -The candidate must acknowledge their nomination and include their signature on the application. Individuals may not be nominated for, or receive an award, posthumously.-Remember, each RRFC can nominate one candidate every year. The candidate and his/her spouse will receive gratis airfare and hotel accommodations to attend the RI Convention.
- KendallA RRFC’s nominee is their zone’s winner. The trustees recommend honoring this individual at prominent Rotary events such as district conferences and Rotary institutes.Upon request, Rotary will provide an award plaque for the zone winner. - KendallYes, thanks Lindsay. The Alumni Association of the Year Award recognizes alumni associations that have made significant achievements in the following key areas:-Increasing awareness of the significant role Foundation alumni play in Rotary by participating in projects or programs.-Demonstrating the lasting impact of Rotary Foundation programs through cooperation with Rotarians in clubs and districts.This photo is of the Rotary Foundation Alumni Deutschland receiving their banner and certificate. They first alumni association to win the Alumni Association of the Year Award.
- KendallThe winner of the third Alumni Association of the Year Award is the District 3020 Rotary Foundation Alumni Association in India. RRFC Yogananda from Zone 5 nominated this association. This association, led by their president, Past District Governor Soma SunderaSai, regularly collaborates with Rotarians and alumni, and keep the Rotary community updated with their newsletter, REACH, and social media. They also participate in National Immunizations Days and other polio eradication efforts.The president of the association will accept the award at the Rotary Alumni Celebration in Sydney, just before the 2014 RI Convention.
- KendallThe winner receives a plaque,banner, and recognition in Rotary media. In order to increase awareness of this award, we held a Facebook chat on 25 March 2014. Past District Governor Soma SunderaSai answered questions about the award, his association, and best practices. You can find the conversation on our Reconnect Facebook page. - KendallIn order to win the Alumni Association of the Year Award, the nominated association must meet the following eligibility criteria:-They must have been formally chartered by the Foundation and up-to-date in responding to all Foundation requests for information.-They must have an online presence through a social media outlet such as Facebook or LinkedIn.-They must promote the value of alumni within Rotary, such as helping the district with orientation seminars. -They must have also completed a project as a group in the last year that had a humanitarian component or a positive impact on a community and involved a majority of the members. -And of course, the association must support Rotary’s mission, and there must be collaboration between Rotarians and the members.
- KendallThe suggested nomination process for the Alumni Association of the Year Award is very similar to that of the Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award. At the zone level the RRFC can form a selection committee that will communicate with districts to find submissions.
- KendallRotarians, alumni, and regional Rotary Foundation coordinators should keep in mind these key points regarding the nomination of alumni associations for the award. These are also similar to the Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award, and this can help the RRFCs manage both nomination processes simultaneously. As you can see the deadlines for the Alumni Association of the Year Award and the Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award are the same. Lindsay, would you launch our final poll?

Currently, there are 122 alumni associations world-wide, representing over 30 countries.Each blue dot indicates an officially chartered alumni association.Alumni associations are important elements of the Family of Rotary in establishing and maintaining a bond among Rotary alumni. They also provide a connection between alumni and Rotarians to network with one another.Connections built through alumni associations can lead to educational and humanitarian service projects for clubs and districts, and ultimately can facilitate increased fundraising and membership opportunities in Rotary clubs.
- LindsayOf course, if there is no alumni association in your area, then this is a great time to start one. If there are groups of alumni that are active, they should be encouraged to charter an association.
