make this presentation.
It gives me great pleasure to do so.
I shall talk of the Inter Country Committees (ICCs) and
their activities, with special reference to the Russo-
French Committee.

In 1921 at the RI Convention in Edinburgh, Rotary
International adopted its 4th Avenue of Service –
„to advance international understanding,
goodwill and Peace‟.

This became one of the targets of ICCs
some years later when the Franco-German
ICC was started in 1950

These aims were encapsulated in the United
Nations Organisation (UN) in 1945 and the United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organisation (UNESCO) in 1949.
It was to embrace the intentions of these
International Institutions capable of guaranteeing
Peace, that ICCs were created

The mission of an intercountry committee is
to build a force that will encourage Rotarians
to visit each other‟s countries and homes, to
strengthen friendships and projects so
formed by encouraging clubs and districts to
connect with clubs and districts in other
countries, and to contribute to world peace.

THE FIRST ICC
The first ICC between Germany and France was created between the two World Wars, but was officially founded
on 23 May 1950 in Strasbourg during the district 70 conference. The ICC was the brainchild of Robert
Haussman and Roger Coutant and its purpose was to reestablish Rotary relations between the two countries,
which were strained during the Nazi era.
That day, Robert Haussman stated that “Rotarians must be from now on at the forefront of the peace ideal.”
