Mount Shasta
 By: Casee Kunz
Mount Shasta is in Siskiyou
County, California.

It is 14,170 feet high.
The population is about 3,390.
Mount Shasta is a stratovolcano with four
cones buried on top of each other.
Shastina is the most evident of the cones
and forms a second peak.

The peak of the mountain is called Hotlum
Cone. The cone formed about 8,000 years
ago and is now covered by a rock dome.
Shasta sits on the Gorda Plate on a
convergent boundary.

Stress from the North American plate
and the Pacific Plate cause many
earthquakes.
The North side of Mt.
           Shasta has been
inhabited since about 600
              B.C by Native
             Americans(the
Shasta, Modoc, Ajumawi/
      Atsuwegi, and Wintu).
    These people believed
        Mt. Shasta was the
   center of creation. The
  native people still live
 in the area and perform
   rituals in honor of the
In 1932, the Rosicrucians believed
that the Lemurians lived in the
    mountain(Lemurians were
super-humans who could change
       themselves from an
 object/material to spiritual).
In 1971, a Buddhist monastery
   was founded on Mt. Shasta.
 Some Native Americans were
  unhappy with the rituals the
  monks performed. Many New
Age enthusiasts worship there.
There is no historical record of the
most recent eruption, but Jean
François Galaup de Lapérouse
claimed he saw Mt. Shasta erupt in
1786. He say this eruption from the
coast. This account is now doubted by
many geologists.
