10. “ Sustainable Design , is a general term that describes environmentally-conscious design techniques in the field of architecture. Sustainable architecture is framed by the larger discussion of “sustainability” and the pressing economic and political issues of our world.” - WIKIPEDIA bbs
11. “ In the broad context, Sustainable Architecture seeks to minimize the negative environmental impact of buildings by enhancing efficiency and moderation in the use of materials, energy, and development space.” - WIKIPEDIA bbs
13. What is a “green” school? green school /grEn skül / n. a school building or facility that creates a healthy environment that is conducive to learning while saving energy, resources and money. Why design & build green schools? 20% of America goes to school every day. Too many of these students and teachers attend schools that are inefficient and miss important opportunities to reduce operational costs, foster learning and protect student health.
14. What is a “green” school? (cont.) Benefits of green schools: A healthy, productive learning environment. Environmentally friendly. Financial savings. Hands-on learning. Improved teacher retention.
15. Healthy Places to Learn/ Teach/ Work Green schools foster and encourage positive changes: Daylight improves performance. Good indoor air quality improves health. Comfortable indoor temperatures increase occupant satisfaction. Good Acoustics increase learning potential.
18. What is LEED ? L eadership in E nergy and E nvironmental D esign What does LEED measure? LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts. LEED for Schools – USGBC
20. What is CHPS ? C ollaborative for H igh P erformance S chools Created by the New York State Education Department and NYSERDA. Third Party Verified certification process through NYSERDA. Molded to conform to SED’s planning requirements while providing an energy-efficient sustainable educational facility. Like LEED for Schools, CHPS requires Energy Modeling to be performed along with Building Commissioning.

25. That was the quick & easy story… This project had begun years earlier, and had many other ‘hurdles to cross’ in terms of localized community issues.
26. Starting in the late 1990’s the Hampton Bays Union Free School District began to experience overcrowding in its two school buildings. After much study and deliberation it was decided that a new school would be built to solve the overcrowding issue. bbs H A M P T O N B A Y S M I D D L E S C H O O L
27. The plan was to build either a new Middle School or a new High School. The Hampton Bays Elementary School would be maintained. bbs H A M P T O N B A Y S M I D D L E S C H O O L

29. The mold issue was solved, but as far as the long term planning process… Bond referendum attempts were made and failed. Public Opposition Groups were formed . There was ‘doubt’ . The Community was not yet united.
