The document discusses using Atlassian Confluence as a personal wiki. It notes that as knowledge becomes more important, knowledge workers need techniques to organize relevant information. While there are many wiki options, the document recommends Confluence due to its easy installation, creation of spaces, dynamic task lists, PDF export, search of attachments, tagging, and blogging functionality. It provides examples of how a personal Confluence wiki could be used to organize notes from books and articles, and to manage various projects.
1. ATLASSIAN CONFLUENCE AS A PERSONAL WIKI
“While you may not be able to develop a photographic memory,
there are some things you can do to improve your 'memory'.”
2. WHY A PERSONAL WIKI ANYWAY?
“Knowledge-based industries come to represent ever-larger portions of the global
economy, the importance of knowledge increases for knowledge-based corporations,
institutions, and organizations as a source of competitive advantage.quot;
- Drucker 1992
“But I'm not a company, WTF?!”
Not quite, but:
quot;As the lifetime of knowledge decreases, the necessity for lifelong learning increases.
Knowledge is becoming ever more important as an individual good, a social resource,
and an economic agent of production.”
- Drucker 1994, Reinmann-Rothmeier 2000;
Reinmann-Rothmeier & Mandl, 1999
And:
“Knowledge workers need techniques to sort,
analyse and archive relevant information to
handle and use today's flood of information.”
- Hube 2005
3. THERE ARE SO MANY WIKIS – WHY CONFLUENCE?
Coming to think of it, I'm using
Confluence as a personal Wiki...
For an exhaustive list of Wiki-Software check:

4. ...because I love it.
Ok, the world doesn't revolve around me, so let's
look at the facts that might make you love your
Confluence personal Wiki as well...
5. THE POWER OF CONFLUENCE I
Easy to install:
●
Creation of different Wiki-Spaces:
●
Dynamic Task Lists:
●
6. THE POWER OF CONFLUENCE II
PDF Export:
●
Search includes Attachments:
●
You can tag Sites in your Wiki-Spaces:
●
There's a Blogging Functionality
●
7. THE POWER OF CONFLUENCE III
Easy WYSIWYG Editor:
●
Powerful but easy to learn Wiki-Syntax:
●
- Similar to HTML, e.g. h1. to h6. for Headlines
- Macros such as {panel} to design a Wiki page
Easy Table of Contents:
●
8. HOW YOU COULD USE IT
Jot down the Gist of Non-Fiction Books, articles, etc.
●
This way:
- You don't have to remember everything
- You wont't have to browse your notepad to look for the page where
you actually wrote it down - A notepad is not “searchable”
Organize your life:
●
- If you're working on several projects, create a Wiki-Space
for each one and leverage the power of Confluence
- If you're on a call or in a meeting, you can save your minutes
to your Wiki instead of taking “traditional notes”
HOW I'M CURRENTLY USING IT
I'm trying to write Master's thesis with it ;-)
