2. Advances in Transportation and
Communication Technologies
Today, modern transportation systems (e.g. air, rail road, water,
underground) facilitate movement of people and goods with
countries, and from one country to another, vast geographic
distances can be covered in far less time, with less cost, and with
greater ease than in the past. Rapid trains, jet crafts, modern
highways, high-speed ferries and other advanced forms of
transport are all making it possible for travelers, services and
products to move between countries and continents in record
numbers. These transportation enhancements are bolstering
economic growth, socio-political ties and intercultural contact (e.g.
tourism, business, educational exchange).
This unprecedented population mobility is enabling more
intercultural interaction both within nations and across borders.
Technological developments in transport and communication are
making it possible for people from diverse language and cultural
backgrounds to interact more easily and frequently than ever
before. Nowadays, we are in more contact with people from other
cultural backgrounds than at any time in human history. 1

3. Advances in Transportation and
Communication Technologies
Human societies around the world have established continuously
closer contacts over many centuries. Recently, the need of
globalization has increased. Advance technologies in
communications, transportation, and computer have given the
process new movement and made the world more interdependent
than ever. 2
Multinational corporations manufacture products in many
countries and sell to consumers around the world. Raw materials,
money and technology move more swiftly across the world.
Therefore laws, social movements, and economies are forming at
the international level. Since 1981, the word “Globalization” has
been used by economists; however, until the latter half of the
1980's and 1990's its concepts did not become popular.
Globalization has been defined by many scholars in different ways.
Its “Worldwide movement toward economic, financial, trade, and
communications integration.3

4. The Effects of Advances in Transportation
Technology on Global Business
1- Faster Speed of Delivery:
The term "transportation technology" refers to all advancements
since the invention of the wheel. However, the invention of rail
transport was the turning point for international trade. It
allowed fast delivery of goods within days or weeks instead of
months, as was the case with carriages. The invention of the
internal combustion engine made trade possible in places not
served by railway. Furthermore, modern cargo airplanes have
made it possible to transport goods between continents in a
matter of hours.
2. Sensor Telemetry:
A major concern for businesses from the time they authorize a shipment
until they receive feedback from the buyer is the condition of
the products and the progress of the delivery. Digital wireless
sensor telemetry technology now provides senders with
information on the cargo en route, including its destination, the
speed at which it is moving, and the temperature of its
environment. 4
5. The Effects of Advances in Transportation
Technology on Global Business
This technology allows businesses to track shipments and
communicate with a shipping company in case of delays or
harmful conditions for the goods.
3- Accessibility of International Trade:
Faster transportation methods have made exports an important
aspect for businesses seeking to expand into new markets.
Companies for which domestic demand is not sufficient, such as
Microsoft, Apple or Samsung in South Korea, rely on fast and
reliable transportation options for continued growth. According
former New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture, Charles M.
Kuperus, international trade allowed agricultural businesses to
contribute $68.7 billion to the U.S. economy in 2006.
4- Globalization in Production:
Product instructions are most often written in multiple languages
these days. Since technological advancements in transportation
have made international trade easier and faster in recent
decades, companies have focused on making their products
attractive and accessible to consumers of diverse markets.4

6. The Effects of Advanced Technology on
Communication
Advances in technology have significantly impacted the way we
communicate in both our personal and professional lives. While
email, Instant Messaging (IM), texting and other forms of quick
electronic communication may have diminished face-to-face
interaction, they've also made communication faster and more
efficient. The speed of email compared to letter mail and posting
content online compared to print publishing are just some of the
effects that technology has had on the way we communicate.5
1- Hyper-connectivity:
For better or worse, people are now able to stay in constant
contact, with one another thanks to the advances in technology
that have brought us social media. Twitter, Facebook, IMing and
texting have let us communicate quicker and more frequently
from any location where an Internet connection is accessible.
For those who use handheld devices for both work and personal
communication, this hyper-connectivity can result in a blurring of
boundaries between their work lives and personal lives. Emails
and calls are answered from work just as work calls and emails
are answered from home.

Communication
2- Cost-savings:
Thanks to the advances in technology that have brought us calling
cards and websites like Skype, which allow users to call one
another for free, telecommunications have become more
affordable. Advanced technology has also given us handheld
devices that combine services such as phone, fax, email and
Internet can also eliminate the need to purchase devices and pay
bills for each separate mode of communication.
3- Obscured Grammar and Spelling:
Interaction via texts, IM and Twitter, which all encourage short-form
communication, has necessitated a type of tech shorthand
referred to as "text lingo," which includes abbreviations and
emoticons. In some cases, students who have grown up using text
lingo in their personal correspondence have attempted to transfer
it to their academic assignments as well, to their own detriment.

Communication
4- Broken Language Barriers:
People who once had to rely on translation dictionaries to
communicate with those who speak different languages now
have more options thanks to advances in technology. They can
purchase handheld instant translation devices, use instant
translators online, or simply change their browser settings to
translate websites into various languages.
5- Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities:
In addition to the increasing prevalence of videos online to
accompany written news stories, many word processors now
feature audio functions that read text aloud, allowing better
accessibility for the visually impaired. People with hearing
disabilities have also benefited from alternative modes of
communication that are easier for the hearing impaired than
telephone communication, like email, text and video
conferencing.6
