1. Monochrome
Hi. I'm Samantha Higgs, a creative photographer
from the south of England. I have a long-standing
love of dramatic imagery.

2. The Colosseum – Rome
Dating from 80 AD and
originally known as the
Amphitheatrum Flavium
(Flavian Amphitheatre)
the Colosseum is one of
ancient Rome's most
famous landmarks.
A testimony to the
Romans' architectural
and engineering skills,
the Colosseum seated
some 50,000 spectators
for a wide variety of often
bloody entertainments.

3. Lost in Music
I've loved folk music for as
long as I can remember.
This is the fiddle player
with Irish folk band Mó
Cáirdé – Irish Gaelic for
'My Friends'.
I loved the way he was lost
in the music he was
playing, paying no
attention to the camera.
I think the lighting in this
shot compliments that 'lost
in the music' feel.

4. Donnington Castle Ruins
Donnington Castle was
founded in 1386 - the
gatehouse, which is the
only substantial surviving
part of the castle today,
dates from this time.
Substantial earthworks
were installed during the
English Civil War. These
are also still visible today.

5. Arches
Detail of the carved
arches on the facade of
the Town Hall, in
Hungerford, Berkshire,
England.
The current town hall, a
magnificent piece of
Victorian architecture
dating from the 1870s, is
the town's fourth.

6. Temple Ruins – Pompeii
The ancient Roman city
of Pompeii was famously
buried under several
metres of ash and
pumice in the 79 AD
eruption of nearby
volcano Vesuvius.
Rediscovered by accident
in 1749, the ruins,
including these, the
Temple of Apollo, have
since been extensively
excavated.

7. Elegant Intruder
Convolvulus Arvensis:
this beautiful flower sadly
comes attached to a
voracious weed.
More commonly known
as Bindweed, it
constantly invades my
garden and chokes my
plants.
I do love the dramatic,
trumpet-like blooms,
though.

8. Tintern Abbey
Founded in the early 12th
Century by Cistercian
Monks, Tintern Abbey
remained in operation
until Henry VIII's
dissolution of the
monasteries almost
exactly four centuries
later.
The towering ruins sit
surrounded by the even
more majestic Welsh
hills, and look set to do so
for centuries yet to come.

9. Tranquility
This was taken at
Bucklebury Ponds, one
of my favourite places.
The morning I took this
shot, it was just me and
the woods: the magical
lighting, the odd quiet
'plip' of a fish breaking
the surface, and the
occasional contented
snort from the horse.
Tranquility indeed.
