Driving Innovation

Innovation at the heart of the recovery
- Our priorities

• Low carbon
Vehicles, Buildings, Energy, Manufacturing

• Digital economy
Ultra-fast broadband, creative media,
Plastic electronics

• Life sciences
Regenerative medicine / stem cells
Driving Innovation

   Open Innovation means that…

Ideas should be able to flow to where they can
be most efficiently researched, developed and
      commercialised, regardless of where they
      originated, thereby generating maximum value
for all of the organisations involved.
Driving Innovation

   Open Innovation – the context:
   • The UK spends £25 billion+ per annum on creating new
     knowledge
   • No business can develop and exploit every good idea or
     technology they find or originate
   • Need to get the best ideas/innovations out to those who
can further develop and commercialise them
   • Businesses must look beyond their own boundaries to
     be and remain competitive
   • Growing inter-dependency between business,
Universities and the wider Knowledge Base
   • Connectivity and collaboration are key
Driving Innovation

All of our programmes and interventions
   explicitly encourage open innovation,
   collaboration and networking
   • Innovation Platforms
   • SBRI
   • Collaborative Research and Development
   • Knowledge Transfer Networks
   • Knowledge Transfer Partnerships

We work with all top 10 R&D intensive companies…..and nearly half
     top 100
And thousands of small businesses are engaged on our programmes
     including start-ups and micros
