Good Stuff Happens in 1:1 Meetings: Why you need them and how to do them well
Letter of Recommendation Scott Mulholland
1. 12/25/14
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing on behalf of Scott Mulholland regarding future employment opportunities. I am the
manager of Business Development for Sterling Jewelers, the largest specialty jewelry retailer in
North America. One of the main responsibilities of my position is to evaluate new growth
opportunities for the company and because of this I am constantly in communication with
individuals from various industries, almost all of whom reach out to our company first. The
reason I am writing this recommendation letter on behalf of Scott is that of all the people that I
have spoken to regarding new opportunities, none of them impressed me as much as Scott.
I have dealt with company CEO's, Talent Managers and Senior Level Executives at Private
Equity Firms, however Scott's enthusiasm and passion truly makes him stand out. Scott exhibits
several qualities that would make him an ideal candidate for any company. First, he is extremely
resourceful. What got my attention first is that he called my direct line. It is extremely rare that
this happens as most people email our CEO or someone in a different job function in the
company which then gets forwarded to me. This not only displays initiative but also shows his
ability to find the correct information. This is not always easy to do and in my experience usually
takes outside the box thinking.
The second set of skills he has is his ability to research and collect data than transfer it into a
cohesive presentation. His understanding of business storytelling, market sizing, and trend
reporting is far beyond that of someone his age. Majority of the time, companies will pitch us on
ideas and opportunities which I'm then tasked with analyzing, evaluating and making
recommendations to our executive team. The presentation Scott put together was almost
identical to something I would have put together.
The last thing I'd like to mention is that we passed on the opportunity Scott presented and yet
he still made that big of an impression on me. The reason for passing on the opportunity is it
was outside of our current marketing strategy which focuses on national campaigns instead of
local, however this was a difficult decision to make based on the passion and way in which Scott
presented the opportunity including the data he provided and his willingness to go above and
beyond to make it work. It is because of all of this I highly recommend Scott to any company
that values the traits mentioned above. I am more than happy to speak on behalf of Scott if
there are any additional questions an employer would like to ask. My email is
Jslesnick@jewels.com and my phone number is 330-353-2111.
