October is “National Cyber Security Month”
During the month of October, individuals, organizations, and communities throughout the United States are gearing up
to promote National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) and let others know that all of us have a role in
protecting our digital lives. Tens of thousands of NCSAM participants across the country will be doing their part. Here on
Scott, the 375 AMW Information Assurance Office and each unit's information assurance officer will be disseminating
information to help educate you and your families. We ask that you take time to read the material. Then, share the
information with your family. We are dependent on the internet and electronic devices. We must all share the
responsibility to keep them secure. Please see the attached Zip File titled “National Cyber Security Month” for important
information to keep your family safe from cyber threats.

ADVISORY from OPSEC: Skype Ransomware Worm Spreading
Many families are using Skype to stay connected during deployments and/or with family members, please share the
information below. Given the mobile nature of the military, I thought this advisory should go out given that malware is
targeting Skype users. According to Trend Micro, many users have reported receiving messages from friends in their
Skype contact lists. The socially-engineered (tactic: curiosity) messages read:
"lol is this your new profile pic?
                                         h__p://goo.gl/{BLOCKED}5q1sx?img=username"

The shortened uniform resource locator (URL) redirects to a download on hotfile.com which pulls down a compressed
file named "Skype_todaysdate_image.zip." The compressed file contains a single executable file with the same name.
The malware is particularly nasty. The worm contained in the file may initiate large scale click-fraud activity on infected
users' computers, and recruit it in a botnet. The malware can also steal user name and password credentials for a vast
array of websites including Facebook, Twitter, Google, PayPal, Netflix, and many others. Some infections will also install
a piece of ransomware which locks the user out of their machine, informing them that their files have been encrypted
and that they will be subsequently deleted unless the unfortunate victim surrenders a $200 fine within 48 hours.

    Countermeasures:
 Always BE SUSPICIOUS of URL shorteners (in this case, "goo.gl"), so
 VALIDATE with the purported sender of the message that they did indeed send you the message and that
           the link is safe
 If you're unable to validate the message is safe, DELETE IT

Don’t forget, too, that if you are leasing a vehicle, that you can turn the leased vehicle in under the SCRA (read about it:

  • 7. Med Group Monthly Matters Page |7 October is “National Cyber Security Month” During the month of October, individuals, organizations, and communities throughout the United States are gearing up to promote National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) and let others know that all of us have a role in protecting our digital lives. Tens of thousands of NCSAM participants across the country will be doing their part. Here on Scott, the 375 AMW Information Assurance Office and each unit's information assurance officer will be disseminating information to help educate you and your families. We ask that you take time to read the material. Then, share the information with your family. We are dependent on the internet and electronic devices. We must all share the responsibility to keep them secure. Please see the attached Zip File titled “National Cyber Security Month” for important information to keep your family safe from cyber threats. OPSEC “National Cyber Security Month” Documents (Press “Allow” when prompted):  Cybercrime Protective Measures: http://slidesha.re/VkROVQ  Elicitation Brochure from DHS: http://slidesha.re/QCIDjS  Family Guide: http://slidesha.re/Re19k6  NCSAM 2012 Privacy: http://slidesha.re/X4YeMy  Safe Social Networking Handout: http://slidesha.re/VHkNYw ADVISORY from OPSEC: Skype Ransomware Worm Spreading Many families are using Skype to stay connected during deployments and/or with family members, please share the information below. Given the mobile nature of the military, I thought this advisory should go out given that malware is targeting Skype users. According to Trend Micro, many users have reported receiving messages from friends in their Skype contact lists. The socially-engineered (tactic: curiosity) messages read: "lol is this your new profile pic? h__p://goo.gl/{BLOCKED}5q1sx?img=username" The shortened uniform resource locator (URL) redirects to a download on hotfile.com which pulls down a compressed file named "Skype_todaysdate_image.zip." The compressed file contains a single executable file with the same name. The malware is particularly nasty. The worm contained in the file may initiate large scale click-fraud activity on infected users' computers, and recruit it in a botnet. The malware can also steal user name and password credentials for a vast array of websites including Facebook, Twitter, Google, PayPal, Netflix, and many others. Some infections will also install a piece of ransomware which locks the user out of their machine, informing them that their files have been encrypted and that they will be subsequently deleted unless the unfortunate victim surrenders a $200 fine within 48 hours. Countermeasures:  Always BE SUSPICIOUS of URL shorteners (in this case, "goo.gl"), so  VALIDATE with the purported sender of the message that they did indeed send you the message and that the link is safe  If you're unable to validate the message is safe, DELETE IT Sources:  Trend Micro: http://bit.ly/PtgFdj  The Hacker News: http://bit.ly/TcqO8W  Tom's hardware: http://bit.ly/XmTyBR Always pause, think, protect.
