INTRODUCTION
Hydroelectricity is a good source of green energy. It
has been used as an environmental power source for
years and is a good substitute of coal, oil and gas.
Although there are some positive aspects of
hydroelectricity. There are also negatives.
WHAT IS HYDROELECTRICITY ?
• HYDROELECTRICITY IS THE TERM REFERRING TO ELECTRICITY GENERATED BY HYDROPOWER.
• THE PRODUCTION OF ELECTRICAL POWER THROUGH THE USE OF THE GRAVITATIONAL FORCE OF FALLING
OR FLOWING WATER.

• IT IS THE MOST WIDELY USED FORM OF RENEWABLE ENERGY, ACCOUNTING FOR 16 PERCENT OF GLOBAL
ELECTRICITY GENERATION.

DAMS
1. A dam is a barrier that impounds water or underground streams.
2. Dams generally serve the primary purpose of retaining water, while other structures
such as floodgates or levees (also known as dikes) are used to manage or prevent
water flow into specific land regions.
3. Hydropower and pumped-storage hydroelectricity are often used in conjunction with
dams to generate electricity.
4. A dam can also be used to collect water or for storage of water which can be evenly
distributed between locations.
How does hydroelectric dam works?
HISTORY OF HYDROELECTRIC POWER
Hydropower has been used since ancient times to grind flour and
perform other tasks.
In the mid-1770s, French engineer Bernard Forest de
Bélidor published Architecture Hydraulique which described verticaland horizontal-axis hydraulic machines.
By the late 19th century, the electrical generator was developed and
could now be coupled with hydraulics.
In 1878 the world's first hydroelectric power scheme was developed
at Cragside in Northumberland, England by William George Armstrong
ADVANTAGES OF HYDROELECTRIC POWER
ADVANTAGES OF HYDROELECTRIC POWER
 High quality energy output compared with low
quality energy output.
 Creates water reserves as well as energy
supplies.
 Reservoirs used for recreation, amenity.
 Good safety record.
DISADVANTAGES OF HYDROELECTRIC
POWER
DISADVANTAGES OF HYDROELECTRIC
POWER
 They are costly to build.
 Can cause the flooding of surrounding communities and
landscapes.
 Dams have major ecological impacts on local hydrology.
 Silting of dams.
 Downstream lack of water (e.g. Nile) and risk of flooding if dam
bursts.
Three Gorges dam in China is the largest hydroelectric power station in the
world.
The Itaipu dam in the Brazil is the second largest hydroelectric power station in the
world.
