Ex: Think of a conversation (present or past) that you deem difficult. What makes it so?
Especially for all the dog lovers in the room.
It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words.
I have some images that do not need words ... Sit back and enjoy these pictures, each of which replaces a thousand words ...
Our purpose can show up in unexpected ways. John Gebhardt, Iraq. … his wife talked with mine last evening and sent this picture. Mindy related that this little girl's entire family was executed. They intended to execute her also and shot her in the head but they failed to kill her. She was cared for by John's hospital and healing up, but has been crying and moaning. The nurses said John is the only one she seems to calm down with, so John has spent the last four nights holding her while they both sleep in that chair. The girl is coming along with her healing. John comes home in early October. He is a real Star of the war and is representative of what America is trying to do. The bottom rung.
Welcome to my listening lab!!!! “I hate dentists” story ... Listening “to” just the words, we not only miss much of the story, we go into our own story ... Listening to our own thoughts instead of listening intently to what is really being said.
Opportunities to criticize, blame or complain? Lots of those!!! Normal ... Safety/survival. I am moved by the stories of grace that are coming out of the shootings in Connecticut ... The father of one of the 6 year old little girls saying, “I am not angry. My heart goes out to the family of the shooter,” demonstrating a huge capacity for rising above the battleground of hate and despair.
Client: At a meeting: Irritated, frustrated and short-tempered. Noticed that and decided to listen, started reflecting back to the “antagonist” what she heard: I hear you saying that ...” By doing so, she subtly took the lead. Meeting concluded with every leaving with a “clearly defined set of responsibilities.”
DEEP curiosity.
Empathy.
Compassion.
INTUITION
The young teacher in Connecticut who, understanding that she and the children in her care, might be victimized by the shooter at any second, somehow had the wherewithal to think that she had to be the “parent” to the children in the care. It was up to her to tell them “I want you to know that I love you.” And so she did. And so she listened to the whisper in her heart that always speaks from love and with love.
I leave this final picture ... Worth a thousand words ... As well as the words themselves. Pause
At this time of the birth of Christ, it is especially important and relevant to listen deeply to the words of the of the Messiah, to listen for opportunities to love one another, and to listen with a willingness to obey the heart’s commands.
