My advice
• Start with your business objectives
• Know your audience
• Be focused
• Be patient
• Take the time to build your rightful
place on Twitter by building relationships
This is all big talk, let’s get specific
6. Open Social Media: Where we tell it like it is
How do you find your audience?
• Twitter gives you all the tools
1.#Discover
2.Search
3.Lists
13. Open Social Media: Where we tell it like it is
Once you find people with whom you want to build
relationships, assign them to lists
1. Create a number of categories for the type of
people you want to meet
• If you are a photographer
Wedding planners
New moms
2. Create a list for each group on Twitter (up to 20)
3. When you find and follow them, assign them to
lists
14. Open Social Media: Where we tell it like it is
Where you’ve been listed
Lists you’ve made
Or lists you’ve subscribed to
15. Open Social Media: Where we tell it like it is
Why are lists so powerful?
1. They allow you to organize your stream
2. They help you to prioritize your interactions
3. Other people’s lists
• Subscribe to their lists
• Follow the people on their lists
16. Open Social Media: Where we tell it like it is
How to be found?
• Now the real work begins
• Spend at least 1 hour each day:
1. Share links to your blog posts
2. Share links to articles (that you have read) related to your
industry
3. Read updates from people on your lists and retweet (RT)
them. Include a comment with the RT if possible
4. And most importantly, start a conversation
5. Pay attention to your @Connect stream to see
who is engaging with your updates

usually centered around a topic. #Whatever

18. Open Social Media: Where we tell it like it is
Twitter has its own culture, respect it or
You’ll be un-followed
Survey asked: What would make you unfollow?
• Offering little value
• Auto posting from Facebook
• Too many back to back posts
• Offensive and vulgar language
• Auto DM
• Constantly selling
• No activity for 15 days or more
• Too many quotes
• Get rich schemes
• Not replying to conversations
