4. What is BitTorrent? A protocol that enables fast downloading of large files using minimum Internet bandwidth. A practice of Peer-to-Peer(P2P) file sharing. Designed by Bram Cohen in 2001.

6. Why should we know ? Extremely popular for downloads on the web. Revolutionized the way of ‘file transfer’ on internet. In 2004, BitTorrent accounted for 35% of all internet traffic. As of 2012, BitTorrent is utilized by 150 million active users (according to BitTorrent,Inc). Very simple yet powerful.

8. Frequently Used Terms Peers : Computers downloading the same file. Seeder : A computer with a complete copy of the desired file.(Ex : any server) Swarm : A group of computers simultaneously sending or receiving the same file. Tracker : A server that organizes & manages the BitTorrent file-transfer process. .torrent file : A file which contains the details of the desired file
