what you do for a living or what the job
we’re recruiting you for entails.
Although we will gladly accept the
assignment to search for a CIO, for
example, we might have no idea about
what makes a good one or whether this
job will advance your career.
In other words, we are generalists in a
world of specialists. So do your research
and do not expect us to give you well
informed answers to your questions
about the company or job
responsibilities.
2. “I haven’t read your résumé or
cover letter.” Our decision about
whether to call you for an opening is
based on a 5 to 10second glance at your
résumé. So make sure we can quickly
spot the essential information. Boil your
bio down to a maximum of two or three
pages. Consider adding an executive
summary at the top, letting us know
what makes you special. For instance,
“MBA, 15 years sales leadership, fluent
Spanish,” will get your message through,
even if the recruiter doesn’t read the rest
of your résumé. Avoid hackneyed words

3. “You don’t make a good
presentation.” Based on your outfit,
the way you carry yourself, or the way
you speak, a headhunter might decide
not to put you in front of a customer.
Although only one candidate will be
hired, our aim is to get positive feedback
on all of them. Our fantasy is for a client
to say, “The four candidates you

You wowed me and I will never ever

Recruitment is part science and part art.
If we have invited you to meet us, we did

the job; that’s the technical part–“the
science.” Your motivation, attitude and
presentation are “the art.” Once you
make it to the interview with us, focus
on these three. Impress us, and we will

Career Above Kids?
Casey Bond, Contributor
For anyone born female, being judged on a
daily basis comes with the territory. Most
people have an unsolicited opinion about the
way women look, behave and speak — and are
more than willing to share. But if you're a
young, successful woman who has deliberately
not had children, expect to face an entirely new
level of scrutiny. The status of my uterus has
been the subject of many awkward
conversations....

Fix The Tax Code

Structuring
Kelly Phillips Erb, Contributor
It's Fix The Tax Code Friday! This week, there
has been a lot of focus on structuring following
several high profile cases that made news,
including charges against former Speaker of the
House Dennis Hastert. Structuring occurs
when large transactions are broken into smaller
ones in order to avoid bank reporting
requirements which kick in at $10,000. If you
do that with the intent to evade, it’s...

11 Financial Words All
Parents Should Teach
Their Kids
Jennifer Ryan Woods, Contributor
If there's one subject that has the ability to
impact kids throughout their entire lives, it’s
personal finance. Unfortunately, it’s a subject
that no one wants to teach them. “The
practicality of teaching [finance to kids] is so
important…it’s the one topic that they’ll
actually use for the rest of their lives, everyday.
But it’s the one topic that...

Robert W. Wood, Contributor
Colorado is leading again, this time with a
permanent tax break on recreational
marijuana. The state is lowering the tax from
10% to 8% effective in July 2017, a move
that could cut into Colorado’s black market.
Colorado was the first state to legalize
marijuana for recreational use, and now it’s
passed a marijuana tax relief. There is even a
onetime tax holiday on September...
