Piezomotors, Presentation at Halliburton facility (NUMAR) in Exton, PA, 2008 on principles of operation and possible applications for oil and gas industry. Dr. V. Lavrinenko designed the first practical piezomotor in 1964 (USSR Patent #217509, 1965) and later designed and produced in Kiev Polytechnic Institute a line of piezomotors for different applications. A.Tyshko, Principal E. E. at Halliburton and a former Dr. V. Lavrinenko co-worker in Kiev Polytechnic Piezoelectronics Laboratory, is involved in the design of the logging tools for oil and gas industry.

4. Electrical to mechanical energy conversion
Electromagnetic motor – traditional motors using magnetic field created
by electrical current flowing through the windings, exciting magnetic
field and producing mechanical force, converting into torque.
Piezomotor – other kind of motors using electrical field – voltage –
applied to the piezoactuators, converting mechanical vibration of the
actuator into force through the mechanical contact.

5. Principles of operation
Input power – AC voltage - is applied to the piezoceramic actuator of the
piezomotor at the resonant frequency thus exciting mechanical
vibrations of the actuator located mostly in the stator of motor.
Piezoelectric ultrasonic motors are driven by tangential stresses in the
interface between stator and rotor (direct contact) or pusher and rotor
(indirect contact).
These stresses are generated by elliptical motion of the material points
of the stator or rotor surfaces and depend on frictional processes in the
contact area.
The contact mechanics of the piezoelectric ultrasonic motors determines
the operational characteristics like rotational or linear speed and torque
or force or transmitted mechanical power and efficiency.
Lifetime and wear properties of piezoelectric motors are also determined
by contact mechanics and depend upon temperature

Application of the piezomotors are based on the following properties
1. simplicity;
2. small size and small step – widely used for cameras, optical systems scanning and
micromanipulators, minimal step may be in order of the fractions of angle second so
piezomotor is considered the ideal positioning device;
3. high torque – up to 50N*m (~35lb*ft) for currently produced motors – used for ball
valves for gas, oil and other liquids – currently produced in Ukraine, 500,000 cycles;
4. low rpm without the gearbox and wide speed range (from <1 to >5,000 rpm) make
possible direct drive;
5. nonmagnetic application – used for NMR systems in medical equipment;
6. low noise operation both mechanical and magnetic;
7. ability to work up to 250C and higher depending on the piezoceramic;
8. piezomotor combines motor and a break eliminating a need in separately controlled
breaks;
9. piezomotor output power does not depend upon the mass of the rotor thus providing
low delay time, which is important for close loop systems;
10. piezomotor is able to reconnect electrical circuitries in milliseconds making possible
to switch current while voltage is crossing zero;
12. reliability and lifetime depend upon a friction pair and currently is in the range of 500
to over 5,000 hours for room temperature, sample tested for 50h at 200C.
13. mechanical overload does not destroy piezomotor
