With the recent redevelopment of postgraduate courses in project management for the School of Civil Engineering and the Built Environment, new challenges were faced to make units more inclusive of a variety of enrolment preferences. The short term ambitions for the courses included developing units that are delivered both facetoface, and entirely online and have the potential to be scaled to meet the growing demand for continuing professional education. To ensure that students could join either facetoface or online offerings of the same units, the implementation team brought internal and external cohorts together on the same unit sites on Blackboard. The units are currently under evaluation but some early learnings may provide insight into new approaches to blended learning, and how these approaches have facilitated new ways of teaching and learning through tentative academic culture change. Delivered at Innovate and Educate: Teaching and Learning Conference by Blackboard. 24 -27 August 2015 in Adelaide, Australia.

This study proposes a new instrument to measure cognitive load types related to user interface and demonstrates theoretical assumptions about different load types. In reconsidering established cognitive load theory, the inadequacies of the theory are criticized in terms of the adaption of learning efficiency score and distinction of cognitive load types. Since measurement of mental effort does not cover all types of cognitive load, a new way of isolating different loads is required. Previous studies have focused on designing interface to reduce extraneous cognitive load. However, interface may have the potential to enhance germane cognitive load because learners may construct their knowledge schemata with interface layouts.

In this presentation by Lucid Smart Pill we discuss the limitations of the working memory. Cognitive Load refers to the amount of brain power required to learn new information, solve a problem or complete a task. Reducing or minimising cognitive load will help people solve problems or perform tasks more with more ease & less strain, usually resulting in more desirable outcomes. Presented by Amie Weller Colbert.

This paper reports on outcomes from a cross-institutional peer observation programme for distance learning tutors - a joint initiative between the Universities of York (UK) and Waikato (New Zealand) - launched for the first time in 2015. The programme was conducted fully online and offered an opportunity for tutors from different institutions and national teaching contexts to address challenges in their practice and share innovations in online tutoring techniques. Participants were paired up and encouraged to collaborate through use of synchronous discussion tools and the mutual sharing of course sites within their institutional LMS platforms. Evaluation of the participant experience revealed that the cultural and institutional differences between York and Waikato tutors were not insurmountable obstacles to effective peer exchange online and could be minimised through adequate preparation up front in defining respective programme cultures and ways of working. Partners who mastered this ‘norming’ phase in their relationship were able to move beyond agreed objectives for the observations to address deeper pedagogic discussions, challenging their views on institutional norms to assessment design and online support for student learning. Emergent themes for discussion between partners ranged from the merits of actively managing student learning online to the formality and tone of the tutor’s voice, focusing on language and modes of interactions with students. The study highlights the potential of cross-institutional peer observation to shine a light on institutional and personal ‘blind spots’ in tutoring techniques, stimulating deeper personal reflection on tutor identity and related strategies in managing student learning online.

The paper presents a project that aims to enhance students experiences and satisfaction through the use of a Virtual Learning Environment. Particularly, it aims at developing a blended learning community to support diverse student population, including students with special learning needs. This project focuses on the teaching/learning aspects of students experiences and satisfaction. Other aspects are geared towards use by student support staff and those whose main responsibility is technical or system administration support. Various methods were used to measure the success of the project and its implementation. Evaluation results show a significant increase in student satisfaction and enhanced progression rate.

Faculty Learning Communities: A Model for Faculty Development

The Covid-19 pandemic has underlined the importance of online teaching within higher education and provided further encouragement to institutions to develop their fully online course provision - a trend which has been gathering pace over recent years. It has challenged universities and colleges to think about how they support their faculty in developing the competencies and strategies to teach effectively online. Looking to the future, how do we support the continuous professional learning and development (CPLD) of online instructors, addressing the needs of both new and more experienced online practitioners, with equal attention to their pedagogical knowledge and technical skills development? What works and why within an online teaching context? In this presentation we will present a CPLD model that provides an overview of the different sources of learning development that are available to online instructors - both within and outside the teaching institution – and how they are interrelated and interconnected as part of a wider ecology of CPLD support to staff. We explain how these different sources of support may be combined to support personalised learning development pathways in online teaching practice, drawing on illustrations of evidence-based CPLD practices from staff developers and academics from across the world (Forbes & Walker, 2022).

A Transgenic animal is one that carries a foreign gene that has been deliberately inserted into its genome. The foreign gene are inserted into the germ line of the animal, so it can be transmitted to the progeny. Transgenic animals are animals that are genetically altered to have traits that mimic symptoms of specific human pathologies. They provide genetic model of various human disease which are important in understanding disease and development of new target.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.

God is a creative God Gen 1:1. All that He created was “good”, could also be translated “beautiful”. God created man in His own image Gen 1:27. Maths helps us discover the beauty that God has created in His world and, in turn, create beautiful designs to serve and enrich the lives of others.
