British Airways Flight 38 from Beijing to London experienced engine failure as it was approaching the runway at London Heathrow airport. The autopilot called for more engine power but received no response, and the pilot was also unable to intervene or gain engine response. The plane continued descending and just cleared the perimeter fence, impacting the turf short of the runway and sliding to a stop at the beginning of the paved surface with substantial damage to the landing gear and wing. All 152 passengers and crew aboard survived without fatalities in what could have been a much worse outcome.
