My questionnaire results proved that the colour scheme was
the first thing which a buyer noticed, therefore it was the
most important factor in the construction of my magazine
because it would determine whether (or not!) my magazine
would get brought.
Choosing the colour scheme was a challenge at first
because I knew I had to get it right, however, after a while I
came to the conclusion that it had to be BIG and bold in
order to attract the audience, and as long as it did this,
then it would be successful.
The colour scheme which I chose was bright and cheerful,
the blue and pink are two which would clash in terms of
fashion, but in terms of print, I feel they compliment each
other nicely. By adding in black and white, it added in a bit
of simplicity so it didn‟t look too in-your-face. These colours
attract the audience because they stand out and have
connotations of positivity, femininity and practically shout,
„BUY ME‟. The colours look exciting on the page, and so
draw the reader in to want to find out more.
Although the contents page and the double page spread
are not the first thing the audience would notice, the colour
scheme was still important to ensure that my target readers
would want to read these two pages in my magazine.
The colours used on my contents page are again clashing
colours (yellow, pink and orange). I used the idea of colour
clashing because it is something which instantly attracts the
eye of any buyer and shows that there is something
intriguing and special about the magazine.
Lastly, the colour scheme I chose for my double page
spread wasn‟t too fussy but wasn‟t boring, I adopted the
colours yellow and pink to compliment the black and white,
because I felt they stood out. Yellow has connotations of
happiness and pink is a naturally girly colour, which would
instantly make the reader want to read the article.
The model („artist‟) used was another important factor in the
construction of my music magazine because it is something
which my audience pay great attention to when buying a
magazine.
Kaplan and Kaja Silverman‟s theory of sexualisation in
magazines helped me to understand the need for models
to look a certain way in order to attract the audience.
Although there is nothing sexual about the model, she still
maintains the expectations of the readers for her to look a
certain way. I chose to use my friend, Holly, as the model for
the main features in my magazine because she is naturally
pretty and is very photogenic. The use of an attractive
model, attracts my target audience because they have a
subconscious need to aspire to look a certain way. To do
this, they focus on who is starred in magazines. It draws the
reader in because, despite the fact they are female, they
still notice prettiness when they see it. This will tempt the
reader into buying the magazine because unknowingly,
they like the fact the model is attractive.
The happiness of the model is clearly reflected and in a
weird way, „rubs-off‟ on the readers and makes them feel
happy about buying the magazine.
The second way in which the model helps to attract my
audience, is the use of direct mode of address. This instantly
addresses the reader and makes the magazine more
personal, allowing the reader to feel more involved. The
model is looking directly into the camera which instantly
creates some sort of connection with the reader, drawing
them in.
The masthead of each page I created helped in
attracting and addressing my audience because they
are all BIG, bold and clear. They are the first typography
the reader will see on each page, due to the fact that
they are written a lot bigger than anything else.
The masthead on the front cover of my magazine
stands out against everything else; this is important
because the reader needs to know what the magazine
is called. The masthead itself „Simply Pop‟ was also
helping in the attraction of my audience because it
instantly let the readers know that the magazine was
purely related to Pop music and Pop artists. This was
practically shouting out at my target audience pop-
lovers „YOU NEED ME‟ because it had all the information
from Pop world included.
The contents page masthead attracted the audience
to actually look at the contents page because of the
ellipsis, it makes the reader subconsciously follow onto
the next piece of information. I chose not to use
„Contents Page‟ because this is dull and is something
which makes the reader flick the page
straightaway…well I do!
The final masthead used in my pages is on the double
page spread. It is successful in attracting my audience
because it is a giant pull quote; this instantly feeds
information to reader about the article and tells them
that it is an informal interview, talking about the „artist‟.
By colouring in the gaps in the letters, it was something
extra which attracted my audience because it added
to the informality and made the readers feel relaxed,
drawing them in further.
The tag line played an equal role in attracting the
audience, with the main masthead because told the
readers the „message‟ of the magazine and what it is all
about. The tag line lets the readers know what to expect
each week and conveys the idea that the magazine is
completely full with articles and features purely
dedicated to Pop world.
Sell lines, puffs and callouts all played a major part in
attracting and addressing my target audience.
The sell line „Lessons in lace‟ attracts the reader because
it is written in a very girly and doodle-y font which plays
on the readers weakness of fashion, due to the fact that I
know my target audience want fashion articles included.
It attracts the reader because it changes the
subconscious meaning of the word lessons and takes a
new approach, therefore engaging my target audience.
The sell line „SHHHH! 10 Celebs reveal their BRIT blunders!‟
addresses the reader, due to the use of the word
„SHHHH!‟. This is because the reader instantly feels
involved and makes them think that they are getting top-
secret information which they can‟t get anywhere else.
The sell line „“recording my new album nearly killed me!”‟
attracts the reader because of the connotations of the
word „killed‟ it immediately attracts the eye of the reader
and makes them want to know more.
The puff „YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENTS
EXPOSED!‟ both attracts and addresses the reader. The
exclamation point shouts out at the reader, as if it is
something important, which grabs their attention. The
word „YOUR‟ is personal to the reader and makes them
feel like they are more involved, therefore attracting
them, as well as addressing them.
The call out „Who‟s dating a fan!?‟ immediately sticks in
the readers mind because they have a subconscious
need to know the answer, and so they will be pondering
on the answer, therefore willing them to buy the
magazine.
Bursts are some of the most important features in
attracting and addressing my audience.
The main purpose of a burst is to attract the reader to the
most exciting, or important, story on the front cover. I
used a burst for this very purpose and I feel I was
successful in doing so, due to my use of bright colours
and white-on-black. When looking at the whole cover,
one of the top three things you notice on the page is the
big pink circle in (near enough-ish) the centre of the
page. It is an important factor in the attraction of the
audience because it can draw any reader in and
subconsciously forces readers to read what it written
inside because it is unmissable.
The white-on-black attracts the eye of the reader
because it looks classy and elegant, and increases the
chances of the word standing out. It helps to emphasise
that my magazine is offering something EXCLUSIVE, giving
the impression that it can‟t be found anywhere else,
therefore drawing the reader in…(the word exclusive also
does this!).
I used another burst on my cover to address the
audience because I wanted them to see the
opportunities my magazine was offering for them to win
or become involved. The word „YOU‟ addresses the
reader directly and makes them want to partake in the
quiz in order to find out the answer. This is successful in
addressing the reader and making them feel personally
involved, and attracting the reader to the other things
my magazine has to offer.
Lastly, I used a mini burst at the top of my double page
spread article to attract the eye of the reader, so they
knew that it was the article mentioned on the cover.
The banner used across the top of my magazine is
used to attract my target audience and offer them
something which they couldn‟t get anywhere else. The
word „exclusive‟ subconsciously allows them to feel as if
they are getting a chance to win something that no
other magazine can offer. This attracts them because
they want to feel like they are getting more for their
money and are being offered opportunities to win and
become involved.
The menu bar is used across the bottom of the
magazine cover and attracts the reader because it lists
several well known artists/bands which will be featured
in the magazine. This is successful in attracting the
attention of the readers because, without a doubt, at
least one of the artists/bands is going to be one which
the reader is inspired by or aspires to be like. The use of
a list is helpful in the attraction of the reader because it,
in a sense, overwhelms them with information and offers
them a lot more than they could have imagined.
I used a banner/menu-bar type of mini article (it might
have a real name?) down the side of my double page
spread in order to attract the attention of the reader. I
used a bright yellow to attract the eye because it
stands out against the simplicity of the second page. I
made sure it was just small snippets of text which told
the reader what the „artist‟ had been doing in the past
year in order to be the success she is now. I feel it
attracts the attention of the reader because if they
were to flick through the magazine they would notice
the bright yellow, then skim read it to get the jist of the
article.
The use of imagery is very important in the attraction of
my audience because without it, the pages would look
boring and too word-y. Images allow the reader to
visualise what is being spoken about and enhance the
selling factor. The images also attract my target
audience because the instantly know who is included in
the magazine, which usually determines whether or not
they want to buy a magazine.
Due to the fact that I have used extremely well known
Pop artists, it increases the attraction of my audience
because they are inspired by, and aspire to be like many
of the artists/bands I have featured. By including so many
well known artists I know that my audience will be
attracted into buying the magazine because these are
some of the many Pop artists they listen to daily, and they
want to find out information about them.
I chose to use/add images of the well-known artists
because it can attract the eye of the reader before they
have even read it, without picking up the magazine and
finding out extra detail, they already know who is going
to be included. (and a lot of the time this is the main
buying factor!)
In addition to this, the use of male artists and boy bands
was a conscious decision of mine in order to attract my
audience because I know that one of the reasons they
buy magazines is the boys that are included. From my
questionnaire results, it was clear that I needed to include
boys in my magazine if I wanted it to be successful. The
use of boys in my magazine has increased the selling
factor and instantly draws the attention of my typically-
stereotyped target audience, girly girls!
The actual contents of the magazine played a significant
role in attracting my audience because it allowed them
to find out what was included in the magazine and what
my magazine had to offer that others didn‟t.
I chose to number only a few of the headlines which
were included in the magazine, rather than listing
everything they could find, because it emphasises that
there is so much more to come. The number of headlines
which I have already mentioned that are included in the
magazine are interesting and engaging, but it‟s not
always what‟s on the page that counts. By leaving out
lots of the page numbers, it tells the reader that as well as
everything they‟ve already seen, there‟s more. This adds
to the „getting more for my money‟ idea.
The contents also addresses the audience because the
use of personal pronouns such as „your‟ addresses the
reader personally and makes them feel like they are
being involved. Secondly, it addresses the reader through
implicit detail, for example „Dappy talks‟ and „Gem‟s
goss to go‟. They don‟t actually state that the „talk‟ is to
them and the „goss‟ is for them, but this is implied,
therefore letting the reader feel more involved in the
magazine.
I used the idea of highlighting some of the page numbers
in order to attract my audience because, not only does it
make them stand out, it directs the readers to the most
interesting stories featured in the magazine.
The little quirky images are used to attract and address
the reader. They address the reader because they are
the sorts of doodle-type drawings (I‟m not sure if there‟s
an actual name for them…!) they would be drawing at
school in the corners of their workbooks or on their pencil
cases. I feel these address the audience because the
reader can associate the images with something they do
and make them feel more relaxed. They also attract the
audience because it makes the page look visually more
appealing.
The letter from the editor is there to attract and address
the reader. I chose to include a letter from the editor
because I think it makes the magazine a little more
personal to each reader and lets them know that they
can feel relaxed, allowing them to feel as if the editor
(myself) is talking to them as a friend.
In the letter I address the audience directly and use
personal pronouns so they feel as if I actually am having
a conversation with them. This attracts the audience
because it isn‟t something which you see in every Pop
magazine, but it is some, therefore I think it attracts them
because it is addressing them and gives them, in a way,
„inside‟ information.
The use of a „x‟ at the end of the letter emphasises the
informality and adds a personal touch to the magazine
because it is something you would find at the end of a
letter from a friend. I think that this attracts the audience
because it looks as if it is something written especially for
them, so draws their attention to it on the page.
I chose to use two pull quotes on my double page
spread because I think that they are visually appealing
and instantly give the reader a piece of information from
the article.
The first pull quote is, as you know, the masthead for the
article, however it still acts as just a „pull quote‟. This
attracts the attention of the reader because they get an
idea of what the „artist‟ is like by just reading it and they
understand the tone that is adapted in the article. It
stands out due to the use of large quotation marks,
coloured in letters and the fact that it is the biggest
typography on the page.
The second pull quote is similarly effective in how it grabs
the attention of the audience. Both of the pull quotes
include some form of information which the readers can
relate to, instantly grabbing their attention because they
understand what is being spoken about. In the masthead
pull quote, the whole idea of singing into a hairbrush in
front of the mirror connects with my audience and grabs
their attention because, let‟s face it, we‟ve all done it! In
the second pull quote the „Tesco‟ attracts the eye of my
audience because it is something familiar to them.
Finally, the article itself was used to attract the attention
of the reader. I chose to write an interview for my article
because it was the most popular answer received on my
questionnaire results and from my own experience,
interviews are always one of the most successful articles
in any magazine. This is because an interview gives the
reader a sense of gain in knowledge about the
interviewee („artist‟) and allows them to feel like they
know the person a little better.
I used a number of features in order to attract and address
my audience, ranging from colour to content and pictures
to headings. When constructing the pages of my magazine
there was a little voice in my head reminding me to think
about the affects on the audience and whether or not it
was going to attract their attention. I think that I have
successfully used numerous features in order to interest,
engage, attract and address my target audience.

  • 2. My questionnaire results proved that the colour scheme was the first thing which a buyer noticed, therefore it was the most important factor in the construction of my magazine because it would determine whether (or not!) my magazine would get brought. Choosing the colour scheme was a challenge at first because I knew I had to get it right, however, after a while I came to the conclusion that it had to be BIG and bold in order to attract the audience, and as long as it did this, then it would be successful. The colour scheme which I chose was bright and cheerful, the blue and pink are two which would clash in terms of fashion, but in terms of print, I feel they compliment each other nicely. By adding in black and white, it added in a bit of simplicity so it didn‟t look too in-your-face. These colours attract the audience because they stand out and have connotations of positivity, femininity and practically shout, „BUY ME‟. The colours look exciting on the page, and so draw the reader in to want to find out more. Although the contents page and the double page spread are not the first thing the audience would notice, the colour scheme was still important to ensure that my target readers would want to read these two pages in my magazine. The colours used on my contents page are again clashing colours (yellow, pink and orange). I used the idea of colour clashing because it is something which instantly attracts the eye of any buyer and shows that there is something intriguing and special about the magazine. Lastly, the colour scheme I chose for my double page spread wasn‟t too fussy but wasn‟t boring, I adopted the colours yellow and pink to compliment the black and white, because I felt they stood out. Yellow has connotations of happiness and pink is a naturally girly colour, which would instantly make the reader want to read the article.
  • 3. The model („artist‟) used was another important factor in the construction of my music magazine because it is something which my audience pay great attention to when buying a magazine. Kaplan and Kaja Silverman‟s theory of sexualisation in magazines helped me to understand the need for models to look a certain way in order to attract the audience. Although there is nothing sexual about the model, she still maintains the expectations of the readers for her to look a certain way. I chose to use my friend, Holly, as the model for the main features in my magazine because she is naturally pretty and is very photogenic. The use of an attractive model, attracts my target audience because they have a subconscious need to aspire to look a certain way. To do this, they focus on who is starred in magazines. It draws the reader in because, despite the fact they are female, they still notice prettiness when they see it. This will tempt the reader into buying the magazine because unknowingly, they like the fact the model is attractive. The happiness of the model is clearly reflected and in a weird way, „rubs-off‟ on the readers and makes them feel happy about buying the magazine. The second way in which the model helps to attract my audience, is the use of direct mode of address. This instantly addresses the reader and makes the magazine more personal, allowing the reader to feel more involved. The model is looking directly into the camera which instantly creates some sort of connection with the reader, drawing them in.
  • 4. The masthead of each page I created helped in attracting and addressing my audience because they are all BIG, bold and clear. They are the first typography the reader will see on each page, due to the fact that they are written a lot bigger than anything else. The masthead on the front cover of my magazine stands out against everything else; this is important because the reader needs to know what the magazine is called. The masthead itself „Simply Pop‟ was also helping in the attraction of my audience because it instantly let the readers know that the magazine was purely related to Pop music and Pop artists. This was practically shouting out at my target audience pop- lovers „YOU NEED ME‟ because it had all the information from Pop world included. The contents page masthead attracted the audience to actually look at the contents page because of the ellipsis, it makes the reader subconsciously follow onto the next piece of information. I chose not to use „Contents Page‟ because this is dull and is something which makes the reader flick the page straightaway…well I do! The final masthead used in my pages is on the double page spread. It is successful in attracting my audience because it is a giant pull quote; this instantly feeds information to reader about the article and tells them that it is an informal interview, talking about the „artist‟. By colouring in the gaps in the letters, it was something extra which attracted my audience because it added to the informality and made the readers feel relaxed, drawing them in further.
  • 5. The tag line played an equal role in attracting the audience, with the main masthead because told the readers the „message‟ of the magazine and what it is all about. The tag line lets the readers know what to expect each week and conveys the idea that the magazine is completely full with articles and features purely dedicated to Pop world.
  • 6. Sell lines, puffs and callouts all played a major part in attracting and addressing my target audience. The sell line „Lessons in lace‟ attracts the reader because it is written in a very girly and doodle-y font which plays on the readers weakness of fashion, due to the fact that I know my target audience want fashion articles included. It attracts the reader because it changes the subconscious meaning of the word lessons and takes a new approach, therefore engaging my target audience. The sell line „SHHHH! 10 Celebs reveal their BRIT blunders!‟ addresses the reader, due to the use of the word „SHHHH!‟. This is because the reader instantly feels involved and makes them think that they are getting top- secret information which they can‟t get anywhere else. The sell line „“recording my new album nearly killed me!”‟ attracts the reader because of the connotations of the word „killed‟ it immediately attracts the eye of the reader and makes them want to know more. The puff „YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENTS EXPOSED!‟ both attracts and addresses the reader. The exclamation point shouts out at the reader, as if it is something important, which grabs their attention. The word „YOUR‟ is personal to the reader and makes them feel like they are more involved, therefore attracting them, as well as addressing them. The call out „Who‟s dating a fan!?‟ immediately sticks in the readers mind because they have a subconscious need to know the answer, and so they will be pondering on the answer, therefore willing them to buy the magazine.
  • 7. Bursts are some of the most important features in attracting and addressing my audience. The main purpose of a burst is to attract the reader to the most exciting, or important, story on the front cover. I used a burst for this very purpose and I feel I was successful in doing so, due to my use of bright colours and white-on-black. When looking at the whole cover, one of the top three things you notice on the page is the big pink circle in (near enough-ish) the centre of the page. It is an important factor in the attraction of the audience because it can draw any reader in and subconsciously forces readers to read what it written inside because it is unmissable. The white-on-black attracts the eye of the reader because it looks classy and elegant, and increases the chances of the word standing out. It helps to emphasise that my magazine is offering something EXCLUSIVE, giving the impression that it can‟t be found anywhere else, therefore drawing the reader in…(the word exclusive also does this!). I used another burst on my cover to address the audience because I wanted them to see the opportunities my magazine was offering for them to win or become involved. The word „YOU‟ addresses the reader directly and makes them want to partake in the quiz in order to find out the answer. This is successful in addressing the reader and making them feel personally involved, and attracting the reader to the other things my magazine has to offer. Lastly, I used a mini burst at the top of my double page spread article to attract the eye of the reader, so they knew that it was the article mentioned on the cover.
  • 8. The banner used across the top of my magazine is used to attract my target audience and offer them something which they couldn‟t get anywhere else. The word „exclusive‟ subconsciously allows them to feel as if they are getting a chance to win something that no other magazine can offer. This attracts them because they want to feel like they are getting more for their money and are being offered opportunities to win and become involved. The menu bar is used across the bottom of the magazine cover and attracts the reader because it lists several well known artists/bands which will be featured in the magazine. This is successful in attracting the attention of the readers because, without a doubt, at least one of the artists/bands is going to be one which the reader is inspired by or aspires to be like. The use of a list is helpful in the attraction of the reader because it, in a sense, overwhelms them with information and offers them a lot more than they could have imagined. I used a banner/menu-bar type of mini article (it might have a real name?) down the side of my double page spread in order to attract the attention of the reader. I used a bright yellow to attract the eye because it stands out against the simplicity of the second page. I made sure it was just small snippets of text which told the reader what the „artist‟ had been doing in the past year in order to be the success she is now. I feel it attracts the attention of the reader because if they were to flick through the magazine they would notice the bright yellow, then skim read it to get the jist of the article.
  • 9. The use of imagery is very important in the attraction of my audience because without it, the pages would look boring and too word-y. Images allow the reader to visualise what is being spoken about and enhance the selling factor. The images also attract my target audience because the instantly know who is included in the magazine, which usually determines whether or not they want to buy a magazine. Due to the fact that I have used extremely well known Pop artists, it increases the attraction of my audience because they are inspired by, and aspire to be like many of the artists/bands I have featured. By including so many well known artists I know that my audience will be attracted into buying the magazine because these are some of the many Pop artists they listen to daily, and they want to find out information about them. I chose to use/add images of the well-known artists because it can attract the eye of the reader before they have even read it, without picking up the magazine and finding out extra detail, they already know who is going to be included. (and a lot of the time this is the main buying factor!) In addition to this, the use of male artists and boy bands was a conscious decision of mine in order to attract my audience because I know that one of the reasons they buy magazines is the boys that are included. From my questionnaire results, it was clear that I needed to include boys in my magazine if I wanted it to be successful. The use of boys in my magazine has increased the selling factor and instantly draws the attention of my typically- stereotyped target audience, girly girls!
  • 10. The actual contents of the magazine played a significant role in attracting my audience because it allowed them to find out what was included in the magazine and what my magazine had to offer that others didn‟t. I chose to number only a few of the headlines which were included in the magazine, rather than listing everything they could find, because it emphasises that there is so much more to come. The number of headlines which I have already mentioned that are included in the magazine are interesting and engaging, but it‟s not always what‟s on the page that counts. By leaving out lots of the page numbers, it tells the reader that as well as everything they‟ve already seen, there‟s more. This adds to the „getting more for my money‟ idea. The contents also addresses the audience because the use of personal pronouns such as „your‟ addresses the reader personally and makes them feel like they are being involved. Secondly, it addresses the reader through implicit detail, for example „Dappy talks‟ and „Gem‟s goss to go‟. They don‟t actually state that the „talk‟ is to them and the „goss‟ is for them, but this is implied, therefore letting the reader feel more involved in the magazine.
  • 11. I used the idea of highlighting some of the page numbers in order to attract my audience because, not only does it make them stand out, it directs the readers to the most interesting stories featured in the magazine. The little quirky images are used to attract and address the reader. They address the reader because they are the sorts of doodle-type drawings (I‟m not sure if there‟s an actual name for them…!) they would be drawing at school in the corners of their workbooks or on their pencil cases. I feel these address the audience because the reader can associate the images with something they do and make them feel more relaxed. They also attract the audience because it makes the page look visually more appealing.
  • 12. The letter from the editor is there to attract and address the reader. I chose to include a letter from the editor because I think it makes the magazine a little more personal to each reader and lets them know that they can feel relaxed, allowing them to feel as if the editor (myself) is talking to them as a friend. In the letter I address the audience directly and use personal pronouns so they feel as if I actually am having a conversation with them. This attracts the audience because it isn‟t something which you see in every Pop magazine, but it is some, therefore I think it attracts them because it is addressing them and gives them, in a way, „inside‟ information. The use of a „x‟ at the end of the letter emphasises the informality and adds a personal touch to the magazine because it is something you would find at the end of a letter from a friend. I think that this attracts the audience because it looks as if it is something written especially for them, so draws their attention to it on the page.
  • 13. I chose to use two pull quotes on my double page spread because I think that they are visually appealing and instantly give the reader a piece of information from the article. The first pull quote is, as you know, the masthead for the article, however it still acts as just a „pull quote‟. This attracts the attention of the reader because they get an idea of what the „artist‟ is like by just reading it and they understand the tone that is adapted in the article. It stands out due to the use of large quotation marks, coloured in letters and the fact that it is the biggest typography on the page. The second pull quote is similarly effective in how it grabs the attention of the audience. Both of the pull quotes include some form of information which the readers can relate to, instantly grabbing their attention because they understand what is being spoken about. In the masthead pull quote, the whole idea of singing into a hairbrush in front of the mirror connects with my audience and grabs their attention because, let‟s face it, we‟ve all done it! In the second pull quote the „Tesco‟ attracts the eye of my audience because it is something familiar to them.
  • 14. Finally, the article itself was used to attract the attention of the reader. I chose to write an interview for my article because it was the most popular answer received on my questionnaire results and from my own experience, interviews are always one of the most successful articles in any magazine. This is because an interview gives the reader a sense of gain in knowledge about the interviewee („artist‟) and allows them to feel like they know the person a little better.
  • 15. I used a number of features in order to attract and address my audience, ranging from colour to content and pictures to headings. When constructing the pages of my magazine there was a little voice in my head reminding me to think about the affects on the audience and whether or not it was going to attract their attention. I think that I have successfully used numerous features in order to interest, engage, attract and address my target audience.
