3. About APM Software
Application Performance Monitoring (APM), also known as Application Performance
Management (APM), is the monitoring and managing of performance and availability of
software applications. APM became Application Performance “Management” when it
started detecting and diagnosing application performance problems to maintain an
expected level of service–translating IT metrics into business meaning.
Two sets of performance metrics are closely monitored. The first set defines the
performance experienced by end users of the application. The second set measures the
computational resources used by the application for said load, indicating if there is
adequate capacity to support the load, as well as possible locations of a performance
bottleneck.
The use of APM is most common for web applications. In addition to measuring response
time for a user, response times for components of a web application can also be monitored
to help pinpoint causes of delay.

6. Summary Analysis
•
SolarWinds Sweeps APM Software Brand Leader Awards
–
•
Market Leadership Based on Value Leadership
–
•
SolarWinds is one of the most disruptive vendors in IT. The company provides data center management
software that competes successfully with sophisticated and expensive offerings from BMC, CA, HP, and
IBM. The SolarWinds method of downloadable software and transparent community interaction is the most
customer-friendly business model in IT. The results are 1) SolarWinds has established a pervasive presence
in data centers, including co-existing with high-end software in the majority of Fortune 500 corporations,
and 2) the SolarWinds brand is recognized and trusted by IT professionals. It is not surprising then that
SolarWinds was selected by IT pros as Market, Performance, Price, Reliability, Service & Support and
Innovation Leader for APM software.
Over 40% of respondents chose SolarWinds as the APM Software Price Leader, while slightly less than 15%
chose second place Dell/Quest. Among the six categories of brand leadership, this represented the biggest
spread between first and second place. It is a strong indicator that SolarWinds software is competitive with
the more expensive products–making it easy for IT Pros to link price leadership and market leadership
when it comes to APM Software.
IBM, Dell and HP Run Second and Third
–
IT Pros selected IBM second-most of five of six brand leader categories, with Dell as the runner-up Price
Leader. Dell placed third in voting for Market, Reliability, Service & Support and Innovation Leader. HP
placed third in the Price and Performance categories.
