thwackCamp 2013: Leveraging the Power of Custom Properties
Custom properties are very useful for customizing how data is presented and acted upon in your monitoring tool. Custom properties can be used in reporting, application grouping, executing scripts and alerting. In this presentation, Leon Adato, Monitoring Architect for Cardinal Health, demonstrates how he creatively uses custom properties to mute alerts and thresholds by device. Leon Adato - Bio: After a brief career in theater –highlighted by one voice-over for John Madden Football on Nintendo and a photoshoot offer from foot fetish magazine – Leon began his career in IT as a classroom instructor because a computer trainer is “the only guy in the room who knows what’s on the NEXT page of the book. And probably not much else.” For 5 incredible years he delivered edge-of-your-seat renditions of standard training room classics like “DOS Basics”, “WordStar Tips, Tricks, & Traps”, and “Intro to Windows”. From there Leon worked his way up the IT food chain, from desktop support to server admin to a series of PC standardization efforts and finally into the monitoring arena. 11 years later Leon continues to work in that space, and has experienced the mixture of joy and sorrow involved in deploying tools as varied as SolarWinds, Tivoli, BMC Patrol, OpenView, Nagios, Sitescope, NetIQ and more into environments both large (up to 250,000 systems in 5,000 locations) and small. Leon has been a heavy user of SolarWinds since 2003, and has implemented SolarWinds NPM, SAM, NTA, NCM, IPSLA, and Kiwi Syslog.
