Centralized Deployment
There are two ways remote nodes can be monitored from a
central server:
» Connect Using WMI & SNMP
 Central server can connect directly to remote nodes using Simple
Network Management Protocol (SNMP) & Windows Management
Instrumentation (WMI)
 For connecting to network devices – use SNMP
 For connecting to servers – use WMI
• In case of connecting to a remote network via a VPN connection, use
WMI/RPC (Remote Procedure Calls)
Note: WMI connections for servers are complicated because of the dependencies on
RPC. If the remote nodes are within the same enterprise, then RPC connectivity may
not be an issue, but RPC is rarely capable of traversing a firewall connectio.n

Centralized Deployment
» Deploy Pollers to Remote Sites
 Useful when there is a large number of nodes to be monitored on a
remote network
 WMI & SNMP traffic gets offloaded
 Tasks can be performed locally &that can be relayed back to the
central SolarWinds server
• Information is sent directly to the SQL Server supporting the main
SolarWinds server
Note: This methodology is not well-suited to the MSP scenario, but may work well
within a single multi-site enterprise. Be aware of latency issues with the database
communication.

Decentralized Deployment
» Independent SolarWinds servers running Server &
Application Monitor (or other products) are installed at
remote sites
» Enterprise Operations Console (EOC) is used to provide a
centralized & aggregated view of individual remote sites
» Customize the EOC on a per-operator basis. This ensures
operators can have customized views to only the sites for
which they’re responsible.
» Filter EOC by a particular SolarWinds product in use
 NetAdmins may use Network Performance Monitor, Network
Configuration Monitor, IP Address Manager & NetFlow Traffic Analyzer
 SysAdmins may focus on Server & Application Monitor, Virtualization
Manager or Patch Manager
