4. In Laos, President of National Steering
Committee for Rural Development and Poverty
Eradication Mr. Bounheuang Douangphachanh
led several thousands of Vientiane residents in
organizing a community walking rally to mark the
18th anniversary of International Day for Poverty
Eradication.
5. The walk started at Patouxay Park and
marched along the Lane Xang Avenue and u-
turn at traffic lights in front of the Presidential
Office. The walk saw the presence of Deputy
Prime Minister Asang Laoly, representatives from
international organizations in Vientiane.
6. “As we know well, poverty and famine are
big concern of the world which we have to
enhance our sodalities to fight and cooperate for
their solutions. On Oct 17, 1987, over 100,000
people gathered at the Human Rights and
Liberties Plaza at the Trocadero to honour
victims of poverty, hunger, violence and fear,”
said Mr. Bounheuang.
In 2003, the Lao PDR named October 17-
24 National Week for Poverty Eradication. Since
then the anniversary of the week has been
marked annually by the government and the
agencies of the United Nations in Laos through a
variety of activities.
7. This year's International Day for the
Eradication of Poverty focuses on people and
their right to live with health, dignity and hope for
the future. Lao PDR's recent record in improving
living standards is impressive, with poverty rates
falling from 46 percent of the population in 1992
to 27.6 percent in 2008.
The current economic boom, averaging 7.9
percent growth annually over the last five years,
provides an opportunity to further eradicate
poverty.
