Elearning 2013

Teachers Only Day – 24th January
           Years 5-8

A Journey of Discovery - Part One
The challenge lies in shifting from teaching and
learning about ICT to teaching and learning
with, and through, ICT with the aim of improving
     student achievement. Rather than using
technology to do old things in new ways, it is
about doing new things in new ways.
Sustainability
• Set aside time (workshops, meetings) to develop/review a
concise statement that describes the way e-learning will be
  integrated into our school’s vision.
• Involve the whole school community (including students
and parents) – organise opportunities to deliberately
inform, engage, and discuss the vision with all stakeholders.
Ensure our Māori community has a voice in this process.
• Check that the vision, including the direction for e-learning,
is understood by everyone – can we see it filtering through
  school-wide documentation and classroom practice?
• Regularly evaluate how well the vision is being shared
  throughout the school and community.
• How will learning and teaching change, and how will ICT support
  this change?
• What type of learning environments will we see?
• How will learning take place?
• What will our students’ expectations of learning be?
• What will our students know, value, and be able to do when they
  leave our school?
• Does our e-learning vision stem from the school strategic plan, and
does it create a picture of what ICT can enable in our school?
• Is the e-learning vision a strong and succinct statement that is easily
understood by all members of the school community?
• How will our e-learning vision support a whole school approach to
the use of ICT and in the Senior School with our laptop/BYOD
  classes?
Ensuring that eLearning is embedded
  throughout our school curriculum
10 Questions to Consider

1. How is eLearning reflected in our school vision? Could our vision exist without e-learning?
2. How is commitment to each of the principles in the New Zealand Curriculum evident throughout our
    eLearning strategic plan?
3. How are teachers and students supported to model and explore the values expressed within the New
Zealand Curriculum, through eLearning? How does the way we think and act about eLearning reflect these
   values?
4. How are students and teachers challenged and supported to develop the key competencies (in contexts
that are increasingly wide –ranging and complex) through eLearning? What opportunities exist to support
students to monitor and demonstrate their development of the key competencies through eLearning?
5. What is the capacity of teachers to integrate eLearning across the learning areas and levels? How do we
     know?
6. What are our teachers’ beliefs about effective pedagogy? What opportunities exist for e-learning to
support these identified teaching approaches? How do we encourage and support teachers to explore how
ICT can open up new and different ways of learning?
7. How are school systems i.e. professional learning, infrastructure, technical support, access to ICT, appraisal
and reporting aligned to support eLearning?
8. How do we evaluate and review the impact of eLearning in our classrooms/school?
9. Career Pathways Y7- 13 - How does e-learning in your school’s curriculum support relevant and timely
    career education and guidance?
10. How does your e-learning strategic plan support the curriculum connections described above?
Key Elements
• Shared language and understanding of what
  e-learning
• What’s the purpose?
• What difference will it make to students?
• Teachers involved and committed to developing
  e-learning in our school.
• Change process and sustain change.
• Focus is important, identifying powerful ways to use e-
learning tools that connect back to our vision to make
a difference to student learning outcomes.
Teachers

• Become actively involved in discussing and
  developing our school’s vision.
• Review our practice – reflect our school’s
vision in our use of technologies in the
  classroom and wider school.
• Talk with our students so they are involved in
  the school’s vision
What is e-learning and what do
we mean by ‘enabling e-learning’?

It is important that we all have a
shared understanding of what we
          actually mean by
            ‘e-learning’.
Enabling e-Learning is defining ‘e-learning’
                      as
learning and teaching that is facilitated by
                      or
supported through the appropriate use of
information and communication technologies
                    (ICTs).
Elearning
• covers a range of activities from supporting
learning to blended learning (the combination
  of traditional and e-learning practices).
• learning that is delivered entirely online.
• Whatever the technology learning is the vital
  element.
• e-Learning forms part of a conscious choice of
the best and most appropriate ways of
  promoting effective learning.
Best Practice e-learning
• enables accessible, relevant, and high-quality
  learning opportunities that improve student
  engagement and achievement.
• e-Learning has the potential to transform the
way teaching and learning takes place.
• It is about using technologies effectively
across the curriculum to connect schools and
  communities.
• provide accessible, relevant, and high-quality
learning opportunities so that every student is
better able to achieve their full potential.
Reflection
            Date: Title/Author/Webpage/Blog etc:
