Netball team undefeated
Since losing 4-3 to St.Aubyn’s
(conceding 2 goals in injury time) in our
opening league game of the season, St. John’s
has remained unbeaten in the North London
Independent Schools League.
Within one week we beat King
Alfred’s twice and drew once and also
achieved a double victory.
After James Dillon suffered an
unfortunate injury, Harry Reynolds made his
senior team debut this term. Harry has
performed superbly, pulling off some fantas-
tic saves. James is currently back in training
and is fighting to regain his position as goal-
keeper.
We are extremely pleased with
the style of football that the boys are play-
ing, by trying their utmost to keep the ball
on the ground and play passing football. In
the new year these teams will be given fur-
ther development of their tackling and head-
ing skills.

The Second Form netball team have
really excelled this term. They are currently
participating in the Borough Netball league
and have won every game this season. The
girls skills, team work and determination have
seen them beat schools including Latymer, Lea
Valley High School, Edmonton County, Oasis
Academy Hadley and St Anne's. The girls
now face Kingsmead in February and are aim-
ing for a victory to enable the team to go
through to the semi-finals and finals in March.
The Second Form team will also be
entered for the end of season tournament
around Easter, to compete for the winning
position. Last season the girls reached the
finals in the tournament and came second
after losing to Southgate School.
The girls are extremely dedicated in
their training and are keen to play in every
game possible, I am looking forward to seeing
them develop even further in the months to
come.

Golf
In my PE games afternoons
this term I have been learning golf. I
have been learning how to strike a golf
club and how to putt. Our coach has
allowed us to use the driving range to
enable us to swing freely and develop
powerful strikes. We have also been
learning about the right arm grip, ball
position, stance and posture. Once we
have mastered the fundamentals, we
will be ready to strike a golf ball.
In putting we have been
taught how to accurately putt a golf
ball into a close hole on the green.
We have also learnt how to use the
proper motion and grip for putting. It
is very hard to get the exact swing, by
trying not to hit it too hard or too
soft, but to get it just right so the ball
goes into the hole and you get a hole
in one.
I am looking forward to my
forthcoming lessons and excited about
what we are going to be learning next.

On the 15th October all First Form to Fifth Form participated in the annual school cross country
event. This event is run along a course of 3 miles. The event was very successful and the ideal cross
country weather conditions certainly made a great difference to the participants. We wish to thank
all teachers and sixth formers who helped to run the event on the day.

3. The inter-house football
competition for the boys consisted
of an A and B team for each house,
with points awarded for wins, draws
and goal scoring loses. All the points
were then accumulated to produce
the overall house winners. The com-
petition was highly competitive and
extremely tight.

For my PE games after-
noons this term I have been doing
horse riding at Kings Oak Stables.
It is a really exciting activity and is
one of my favourites out of the
wide range of activities on offer
for our PE lessons. The pony I
ride is called Zac, he is well be-
haved and I feel confident when on
him.
In the lessons we have
been learning about smooth transi-
tions, going from a walk to a trot
(sitting, rising and standing) and
then up to a canter. The riding
instructors are very helpful and
friendly and they do not make us
do anything we are uneasy about
doing. I am hoping the school
continues to let us have privileges
like horse riding because it really
makes this a wonderful school.

Horse riding
During the inter-house competi-
tion this term, the girls from First to Fourth
Form participated in a netball tournament
during their PE games afternoon. The girls
were divided into the four houses, Toads,
Moles, Water Rats and Badgers. All the
girls played well and were dedicated to
playing their best for their houses. The
games were all played in good spirit while
rival houses loudly cheered their oppo-
nents.

Swimming
Every year the first form pupils have
swimming lessons as part of their Physical Educa-
tion curriculum. Currently all first formers go to
Furzefield Swimming pool on Monday mornings,
where swimming takes place from September
until Easter. The sessions are led by specialist
swimming instructors at the centre and pupils are
working on improving their stroke techniques,
their confidence in swimming, swimming deep to
retrieve submerged items and jumps into water.
Pupils then work towards participating
in the competitive school swimming gala which is
always held towards the end of their unit of
swimming and involves over eighty races.
