Welcome to day 2 of the workshop – today we will go through the next two stages of the process (TECH and IDEATE)
It’s now time to talk a bit about the new technology trends. We will introduce some of the latest trends and technologies for your inspiration, so take notes and ask questions along the way.. You should try to keep your problem statement in mind and see if there are any of these technologies that could be used in relation to your problem. You might already be familiar with many of these technologies, the goal of this session is that we can refresh your memory and inspire you to think about the technologies in relation to your problem statement.
But first of all.. How many of you read the news every day? How many of you read technology magazines or follow startup/tech news online? *ask why they do it/don’t do it? Why do you think it is important to be updated on the latest trends, technologies and tendencies? It is really important for an entrepreneur to stay tuned and be on top of the latest trends cause that is the best way to spot new opportunities.. Many entrepreneurs make it a habit to spend 20 minutes every morning just surfing the latest news while taking notes.. Most days you will learn something new but you might not have a breakthrough.. But then, after two weeks or so you will start recognizing new patterns.. You will start to see new consumer needs and pairing these needs with your knowledge about new political legislation and maybe a new technology you have learned about.. And suddenly you can see a great opportunity for a new business idea! So that was a big of advice for your future.. Now we will go through some of today’s most important trends.
As you know a lot of new technology is being developed every day, and according to the Intel founder Gordon E. Moore (also called Moore’s law) there is a doubling in computer chip performance roughly every two years. This means that processing speed, memory capacity, sensors and number of camera pixels are improving at exponential rates. In other words technology is becoming a lot faster, better, thinner, lighter and more advanced. Devices are the items we use to connect to the internet. All our devices are getting smaller, faster, lighter and more advanced – we can now connect to the internet through our computers, tablets and smartphones everywhere we go. Our identity has become embedded in our devices and we are constantly online to check-in to new places, share photos and music, and to stay updated on what is happening in the world around us.
As you can see on this graph – in 2014 there will be more mobile internet users than desktop internet users!! Some of the latest devices include smart phones, tablet computers, laptops and notebooks.
One of the biggest inventions for devices is the new marketplaces for apps. In both the apple app store and the android market place you can find tens of thousands of smart applications for your devices. Developers can make money by creating new applications and the consumers can find and download apps for pretty much everything. Because of this fantastic distribution model it is profitable for developers to continue innovating and build new applications.
A big trend to know about is solomo – social location and mobile.. We will now quickly go through these terms and look at some of the innovations behind it.
The social has become extremely big in the 21 st century. Everything is now social, we are part of social networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace and we spend an increasing amount of time keeping in touch with our network through these platforms. Today we can share photos and music on the go, we can access media like news and fun videos and we can share information and knowledge through platforms like Quora and Formsspring. Online knowledge network has become the new source of information – you can use crowdsourcing to access thousand of people around the globe and ask these people for help with whatever you need help with. Or you can check for answers in the big databases like Wikipedia where you will most likely find the answer.
Examples of social music sharing services
Examples of online social knowledge sharing networks, Places like Quora; where you can submit a question and the crowd will answer, are interesting from a social standpoint since that type of crowd sourced information sharing could also be the key to solving many social challenges. Often times other people in your community have the answers to your problems so if you can put a smart system in place to enable better collaboration you can help communities solve their own problems much more efficient. *Encourage the students to do their own tech research to learn more about these services..
With GPS enabled smartphones we allow our devices to know about our location everywhere we go. This trend has led to a number of location-based apps and services that use the knowledge of your location to push information about nearby shops, events or marketplaces. Many small shops, local craftsmen and designers are using this to get better exposure and increase their sales.
Examples of location-based services
As mentioned previously our mobile phones are becoming increasingly advanced. With the new smart phones we can access the internet and use various applications to shop, play games, find information, stream videos etc. etc. some phones also have build in Near Field Communication (NFC) and can therefore be used as payment platforms. Another thing to notice is how important design has become for our devices – User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) is extremely important for the success of new applications. New apps have to be easy to use and look good in order to get people to use them.
Examples of mobile photo sharing apps.. Imagine if we could take a picture of a problem you are having and post it to your network so they can help you solve it?
Examples of text-based apps *check the links to learn about their functionality..
Many of these services are powered by cloud computing – Amazon, Google and many others offer online server capacity that enables you to access services online instead of having to download each program. Cloud hosting makes is possible to scale your services very quickly since there is no limit on storage and processing power.
Examples of cloud services
The last trend we would like to mention is gamification. Over the past years game mechanics have become embedded in many new sectors like education and corporate training. By utilizing game mechanics like points or badges you can motivate people to have a certain behavior. Games make it fun to solve a task so if you can integrate gaming in your idea you might have an easier time attracting new users..
Examples of successful gaming companies.. Zynga is the biggest game provider using the Facebook platform (games like Farmville and Mafia Wars have been extremely successful) KhanAcademy is a very interesting new model that transforms education (the students will watch the lecture online and when they come to school the professor is available to help them do their homework..) Foursquare is a social network where you can “check-in” to different locations and thereby signal to you network where you are..
With the improved functionality of smartphones, we see a lot of smart new ways to use these powerful devices. Our smart devices can be used to various new advanced services within for example healthcare, agriculture, and education. You can now find a large number of apps that help keep you healthy, by monitoring your blood pressure, cholesterol level, glucose level and so on. The camera in new smartphones is so advanced that it can even be used for skin examination, and other self-diagnosing procedures.
Play one or more related videos *find examples in the video folder Just to open your eyes to the technologies that are already available..
We hope this gave some of food for thought. You can now keep these technologies in mind while proceeding to the next stage. Now it is finally time to start ideating!
