1. The city of Denver was founded in November 1858 as a mining town during the gold rush of Pikes Peak in the
western territory of Kansas.
On November 22, 1858, General William Larimer named the town site Denver to curry favor with Kansas Territorial
Governor James W. Denver.9 Larimer hoped that the town's name would help to become the county seat of Arapaho,
but, unknowingly Larimer, Governor Denver had already resigned from office.
